My name is Erik Markovskii — percussionist, composer and teacher with more than 15 years of teaching and over 1,000 students. The jaw harp has been part of my music for many years, and I've played it in many of my projects.

I teach the jaw harp across traditions: Yakut khomus, Altai komus, Kyrgyz temir komuz, German Maultrommel, Chinese kouxian and Indian morsing. Each has its own sound and technique, and we'll find the one that suits you.

Background: a degree in psychology and education, 20 years on stage, and theater music nominated for the Golden Mask, Russia's national theater award (Best Composer).

About the lesson

My own method: I've built a step-by-step jaw harp system for fast progress and a deep understanding of the instrument in every detail. You'll get real control over your sound, breath and rhythm — not just a few tricks.

Who it's for:
• Complete beginners — I'll help you choose your first jaw harp
• Players who can get a sound but want clean rhythm and melody
• Musicians and singers who want to add jaw harp to their music

What we work on:
• Holding and striking: a clean, strong sound without hurting your teeth or lips
• Breathing: playing on the inhale and the exhale
• Overtone melodies with the tongue, throat and mouth
• Rhythm and groove, from simple pulses to fast patterns
• Styles: Yakut, Altai, Kyrgyz, German, Chinese and Indian
• Improvisation and playing along with music

Format: individual 60-minute lessons on Zoom, in English or Russian.

Free first lesson — 30 minutes. We'll play together, and you'll leave with exercises you can practice on your own.
