Find out more about Andrew Bugeja

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

I was exposed through music from an early age through my grandfather who was a professional clarinetist. When I was admitted the National School of Music, my passion started growing and I was getting more curious about piano and obviously I practiced more. Moving to Italy was so important for me; my lessons there were a revelation to what music is. I got more hooked on the instrument and was given more possibilities to explore the instrument and mostly the art of music.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

As long as the music is honest and good, it will touch the soul and makes one go crazy. I do love to perform piano music of various genres, however listening is extremely important, not to just music for the instrument one plays but to anything that is well composed
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

Playing and performing a composition is a delicate and most humble jobs. We have to be faithful and understanding to the composer; yes we need to put our personal input and character, but the most important is to transcend the thought, become the music and make the silent printed notes take life through our playing. Mostly to understand not just the notes but the music between the notes.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

Each and every instrument has its own difficulty, but
as the great Vladimir Horowitz once said; "the piano is the easiest to start and the most difficult to master”. The vast repertoire composed for this instrument is huge. On must devote hours of practice and thinking to be able to make this instrument sing like a human voice and connected to the human soul, also to be able to internalise a piece of music.
  • What are your keys to success?

Be faithful to the composition, and humble infront of the art of music.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

This is hard… Sergei Rachmaninoff. I love his music! He was an excellent pianist and a great composer. He was a musician who overcame a dark period in his life and still managed to create some of the best music ever written and perform again.

Sviatoslav Richter. I love his tone quality, and interpretations. His artistry is impeccable and his artistic understanding of anything he played is unique.

Arthur Rubenstien. I would love to have a coffee with him and seeing him with his usual cigar, and listen to him speak about anything!
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

The legendary cellist Pablo Casalas was asked at the age of 80; why he continues to practice four and five hours a day." Casals answered: “Because I think I am making progress.”
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

Passion and love piano and for music.
