About Christopher
As a volunteer in Zimbabwe in 2016, I taught small classes of young children in Zimbabwe and individual children in Oxford preparing for senior school entry. The Zimbabwean pupils improved their English and those in Oxford got into their senior schools of choice.
I started tutoring a Year 10 student in August 2017 in Greek GCSE for a year and he set his exams this summer. He had weekly hourly lessons and as he approached his exams, I tutored him twice a week to ensure that his exam technique was strong. He took his Greek GCSE a year early and scored a "9" (equivalent of an A*). I continued to tutor him for Latin, English, and History GCSEs taken in summer 2019. My key focus was to improve his essay-writing techniques. He achieved straight 9s in his GCSEs, with very high marks in the subjects I tutored.
In addition, I tutored and prepared a Year 8 student for his senior school scholarship exams for the academic year 2018-19. Also teaching a Year 8 student who is new to Classics and will prepare her for GCSEs in 2020.

I have studied Classics since I was 8 and have enjoyed it ever since. Now I have the opportunity to study the classical literature of the Greats like Homer and Virgil in depth. For those who enjoy de-coding, puzzles and great storytelling, Classics has the ingredients of an exciting course. To enjoy the Classical languages, you need to study the basics; that means the vocabulary and the grammatical structures associated with any language. These are the basics that I would expect to drill down in each and every lesson, whether you are a primary or secondary student.
Another aspect that I expect to focus on is the ability to freely translate not only from English to Latin/Greek but also from Latin/Greek into English. Having the ability to do the two-way translations increases confidence in reading. Translation passages may be provided as additional homework depending on the level of the student.
Reading aloud and translating on the spot will be required during the lesson as well. This increases confidence in using the language. Depending on the student level, we may begin to do this with original Classical literature.
I enjoy students who interact and discuss their work with me. Students who are experiencing problems with certain aspects of their Classics work should raise those points with me at the outset so that I can focus on those areas with them. I would expect the student to overcome their difficulties within 2 - 3 lessons.
Those preparing for tests or exams will be expected to complete sample papers or questions on a regular basis.
