My approach will very much depend on the type of student I am dealing with but in general.
In case of Programming, I would like to make the student grasp the understanding of a particular concept lets say Recursion, Array, Pointers, their basic structures and let him code more and more solving more problems.
Similar with other subjects, First significant time on concept and then more of practice.
