About Mansur

I am a third-year computer engineering student at Ryerson University. I have spent an innumerable amount of time tutoring friends, family members and strangers in math and physics. Consequently, I now wish to take my passion for teaching and helping students understand and appreciate these fields to a professional level.

My methodology varies per individual: Initially, I engage in conversation with the student with the purpose of understanding their knowledge, strengths and weaknesses on the topic of discussion. Then, based upon the provided information, I formulate sequential and gradual lessons to help them start from what they know towards what they wish to know.

My experience as a tutor started off with my family: I taught my siblings mathematics varying from middle-school to university levels. In doing so, I realized I genuinely enjoy teaching and helping others learn--especially at a subject feared by many either due to its difficulty or the lack of passion from their instructor. Consequently, I started tutoring friends, then through friends, strangers. Now I wish to take this experience from just a hobby to a profession.

My belief in learning (in general) is that there is no such thing as a "stupid" person--only a bad tutor. I see this trend prevalent in public education full of teachers qualified in the knowledge of the subject their teaching, but not in how to communicate it. Thus, leaving majority of students uninterested or feeling that the topic they're learning is too difficult. Yes, a student may make mistakes and fumble in the process of learning, but that itself IS learning. And my hope is that I can provide a learning experience for students willing to learn in such a manner that they won't feel "stupid" but excited to learn.

  • What motivates you to tutor and why?

Teaching is learning in itself, and I pride myself on knowledge; I believe knowledge is the most powerful skill one can acquire in this world to do an innumerable amount of things, and that fascinates me. I want to be a medium for students to achieve that for themselves. Especially, since I've lived through the horror of public education and know that it really needs to be restructured (at least where I live). This segues into another belief of mine: a connected world. Teaching others allows them to connect to the world in ways they never could've thought possible, and in hopes that this continues in a sort of domino effect, I believe this world can be even further astounding than it already is.
  • When did you start developing an interest in your subject area?

I developed this interested starting in my 11th grade of high school.
  • If you had to think of a role model for your work, who do you think of any why?

Anyone that can teach me something new and useful, I'm inspired by them. So to answer the question, I don't really have a specific role model - I just believe that we have one life to live, so why not live it knowing as muny wonders of this world as possible (through knowledge)?
  • What is the biggest obstacle you had to overcome in mastering your craft?

Discipline - It's hard to stay focused, motivated, and consistent when you just don't feel like doing the work.
  • In your opinion, what makes someone excel in your subject area?

Understanding the theory behind the concept as opposed to just knowing how to solve individual problems.
  • What would you say to a student who says, "this is too difficult, I give up"?

I wouldn't say much. I'd try to understand what they find difficult and why they find it difficult. Then, I'd cater the learning experience to them so that they could understand the concept.
  • How does someone become a Super Tutor?

Don't view your students' learning and success based upon their skills. Base it upon your skills as a tutor. I.e. If they're doing poorly under your mentorship, it's not because they're stupid, it's because you're failing to do your job as a tutor.
