About Alec
I am a passionate Maths tutor, with a broad range of academic and work experience. I have provided private tuition in three different countries, obtained university qualifications in Mathematics, Secondary Teaching, Computer Science, and Geophysics, and worked full-time as a Data Scientist and Geophysics Researcher. I draw on these experiences to provide a well-rounded teaching approach that includes real-world examples, while also attempting to provide an answer to the age-old question "when will I ever use this?".
Maths is my primary teaching subject, accounting for the majority of my tutoring experience. However, I am also happy to tutor both Physics and Information Technology / Computer Science if desirable. In the past, having these these subjects interspersed with Maths lessons has proven a useful option to students. Finally, I am comfortable teaching many topics in Geology, so this can be arranged. Please see prices below (per hour).
At the moment, given the current covid-19 outbreak, I am working principally as an online tutor. Depending on how the situation unfolds, there may be options to include in-person sessions at a later date (location dependent).
MY EXPERIENCE
I have provided one-to-one private tutoring on and off over the past decade in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, ranging from Year 8 to Year 13. I have also taught Mathematics and Information Technology to secondary school classes across three different schools as part of my teaching diploma in New Zealand, accumulating over 150 hours of lesson time. Finally, I worked as a university tutor for multiple 2nd and 3rd year Geophysics courses over four years while studying and working in New Zealand.
TEACHING APROACH
My experiences have taught me that an underdeveloped foundation is the principle reason students struggle with numerical subjects. Without a solid understanding of basic concepts, it becomes difficult for students to keep up with a fast-paced school curriculum; instead, they spend the majority of class time struggling with pre-requisite material. This can lead to a continued struggle with numerical subjects throughout school life.
My approach therefore involves quickly identifying where the gaps in understanding lie, and building them up to the level required to keep up with the school curriculum. I achieve this by developing examples / exercises designed to feed out and encourage students to wrestle with misconceptions in their understanding.
My ultimate goal in private tutoring is to provide students with the skills and understanding to enjoy continued success throughout their school career and beyond. If I can achieve that while passing on a love of learning and appreciation for the value of mathematical concepts in the wider world, even better!
ONLINE LESSON PLAN
Lesson Structure: Tutoring is performed over Skype, where students will be able to see a digital whiteboard running locally on my machine via a screen-share. This will be the focal point for lessons, with options to explore online mathematical tools where appropriate (e.g. Desmos, GeoGebra, Wolfram Alpha). Lesson time is balanced between demonstrating new ideas, verbally working through problems, and discussing student work (see Outside of Lessons).
Outside of Lessons: Students may be asked to complete exercises prior to a lesson, to ensure they are getting the practice necessary to consolidate their learning. If so, this will be communicated towards the end of the previous lesson (or earlier if necessary). Students can return work by taking a picture or using a scanner, with it preferable to submit work at least 24 hours before the next lesson starts.

Alec helped me on a first year Maths paper at university that I needed to pass for my degree. He was patient and helped me to understand topics I struggled with (especially algebra). I started to feel more confident and was able to keep up with lecture material. I ended up achieving an A-.
During my second year of my undergraduate degree, Alec really opened up a lot of opportunities for me while I was studying. Most of my courses involved a lot of algebra and physics concepts which I didn’t have a strong background in. During my tutoring sessions with Alec he had very clear lesson plans and goals that we would achieve with assignments. I learnt a lot more from him that trimester than any of my lectures. My internal grades went from a 40% up to 65% (which for a subject I thought I would fail was an amazing achievement for me)
