About Derek
Hi, my name is Derek, and I’m an Applied Mathematics student at Brown University. I tutor math through Calculus I, including Algebra, Geometry, Precalculus and Calculus I
I’ve always enjoyed helping students understand difficult math concepts by breaking them down into clearer, more manageable steps. My goal is not just to help students get the right answer, but to help them understand why the answer makes sense.
I have completed math coursework through Calculus III and have a strong background in both problem-solving and mathematical reasoning. I also scored a 770 on the Math section of the SAT and a 1520 overall.
I founded Elevate Your Aptitude, a nonprofit organization focused on helping high school students build college readiness skills, including academic support and test preparation.

I believe students improve most when they understand the reasoning behind a problem, not just the answer.
Instead of simply showing a student what to do, I guide them through the thought process so they can recognize patterns, avoid common traps, and solve similar problems independently.
I usually begin by identifying the student’s current strengths and weaknesses.
This may include reviewing past practice tests, looking at missed questions, or working through a diagnostic set together.
From there, I build lessons around the areas that will produce the most improvement.
Any level of student is welcome!
