About Theodora

As a CFA, FRM and tutor with over 10 years of experience, I combine a flexible and personalized approach to fit each student’s needs with a focused and structured approach to ensure we meet the student’s goals. I am an Economics graduate from the University of Toronto, where I tutored and was involved in research. At that time I also worked as an Economics Writer for Prep101 academic prep services, designing mock exams for Economics courses. My mission is to guide students toward success - whether that means excelling in class, mastering a subject, or passing a high-stakes exam. I have worked with university students - commerce, economics, mathematics, MBA - as well as working professionals in the finance industry and high-school students. My professional experience spans both traditional finance and social finance / impact investing, and I am happy to brainstorm with students on their academic and career plans.

My Teaching Approach and How I Share Knowledge

As a tutor specialising in economics, finance, and related disciplines (e.g. statistics, mathematics), I combine academic rigour with practical application to ensure that each lesson is both intellectually engaging and immediately useful. My teaching philosophy centres on clarity, adaptability, and confidence-building—making complex concepts understandable and showing students how to apply them in real-world scenarios.

Teaching Methodology & Techniques

I tailor my methodology to suit each student’s learning style and goals. Whether you're a high school student tackling introductory economics, a university student mastering advanced financial models, or a professional preparing for exams like the CFA or Canadian Securities Institute certifications, I use:

• Concept-first instruction, ensuring you understand the "why" before the "how"
• Problem-based learning, with real-world examples and case studies
• Active recall techniques and spaced repetition for exam preparation
• Interactive tools, such as digital whiteboarding, structured notes, and practice quizzes

Typical Lesson Plan

There is no such thing as a “typical lesson” - I meet students where they are at. We begin with your goals, create a plan, and execute on it. Depending on the student and the topic, I may use storytelling, diagrams, and breaking concepts down into manageable segments. My objective is to help you identify your gaps, explain topics from the ground up so that you understand them, and give you practice to help you retain them.

What Sets Me Apart

What differentiates me as a tutor is my hybrid background: I bring both academic depth and extensive professional experience. I’ve worked with students across multiple levels and understand the nuances of preparing for high-stakes exams as well as succeeding in coursework. My sessions are focused but approachable, creating a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes—both of which are key to learning.

Who My Lessons Are For

• High school students needing a strong foundation in economics, mathematics or business
• University/college students studying economics, finance, accounting, or related fields
• Professionals and adult learners preparing for certifications such as CFA, Canadian Securities Course (CSC), or other industry-specific qualifications

Location:

• Online sessions are held via Zoom. I share the whiteboard files with students after each session.
• In-person locations are based on the student’s needs and preferences. Common meeting spots include public libraries downtown, libraries at the University of Toronto’s St. George campus, coffee shops, or the student’s home.

Whether you're aiming for top marks in school, tackling a challenging university module, or advancing your career through professional certification, I’ll meet you where you are and help you get to where you need to be.

  • 1) When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

My interest in mathematics, economics and finance was sparked early on during my undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto. I was fascinated by the way economic theories could explain and influence the real world. The intricacies of financial systems, market behaviour, and the impact on society drew me in. What truly solidified my passion was the combination of theoretical learning and hands-on application. During my time as a tutor and economics writer for Prep101, I had the opportunity to dive deep into these concepts while helping students grasp complex ideas, which further fuelled my desire to continue in this field. Over the years, my work as an investments professional has reinforced my passion for math, economics and finance, as these fields offer endless opportunities for learning, problem-solving, and real-world impact.
  • 2) What makes you passionate about your subject?

What excites me about mathematics, economics and finance is their tangible relevance to every aspect of our lives. Whether it's understanding how global markets work, analysing financial strategies, or solving real-world problems with mathematical models, these fields provide the tools to interpret and navigate the world around us. I love helping students connect theory to practice, especially in subjects like economics where a concept can seem abstract until you apply it to everyday situations. The challenge of making complex concepts digestible for students and seeing them achieve that "aha!" moment is incredibly rewarding. It’s the combination of intellectual rigour and practical application that keeps me engaged in my subject.
  • 3) What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

What I enjoy most about tutoring is the opportunity to help students build confidence in their abilities. It’s incredibly fulfilling to watch a student start from a place of uncertainty or struggle, and then gradually gain both understanding and mastery over a topic. I also appreciate the unique, one-on-one dynamic that tutoring provides. I can tailor my teaching approach to the individual needs of each student, adjusting to their learning style and goals. This personalization allows me to truly make a difference in their academic journey. There's something special about creating an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and learning through the process.
  • 4) Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.

I’ve been fortunate to have had several influential teachers throughout my academic and professional life, but one of the most memorable was my undergraduate economics professor at the University of Toronto. She was not only brilliant but also deeply empathetic towards her students. She had a way of making even the most complex economic theories feel accessible, and she encouraged us to approach problems from multiple perspectives. Her ability to explain difficult material with clarity and patience inspired me to adopt a similar approach in my tutoring. Her passion for the subject and her genuine care for her students left a lasting impression on me, and I strive to bring that same enthusiasm and commitment to my own teaching.
  • 5) What are your keys to success?

For me, success is all about a balance of preparation, adaptability, and consistency. In both my own studies and in tutoring, I’ve learned that a deep understanding of the foundational concepts is key to tackling more complex problems. I also believe in setting clear goals and breaking them down into manageable steps, which allows for steady progress and a sense of accomplishment along the way. Another key to success is the ability to adapt. Every student is different, and my teaching approach evolves based on their individual needs. Lastly, I believe in the power of perseverance and creating a supportive environment where students feel encouraged to keep going, even when they face challenges. The road to mastery isn’t always smooth, but with the right mindset and approach, success is inevitable.
