About Jako
I am an historian, having obtained my PhD in History in 2020. I have been tutoring for about six years and have lectured at both Rhodes University and the University of Fort Hare. These classes would range from eight to 140 students.

I have tutored first and second year university students as well as lectured first, second and third years. I also supervise Honours and Masters level History postgraduates. My most effective method of teaching I have found, is to engage with students in an approachable manner. Apart from being intimately knowledgeable of the prescribed readings (which I would read beforehand), I would try and present the material in a way which students will understand, starting a conversation and then facilitating that conversation. I also expect my students to read the prescribed readings, as self-reading is crucial in developing their comprehension skills. Therefore questions will be asked with reference to those readings. However, I do also understand that some students are hesitant at participating due to social as well as language constraints. In terms of these students, I will make them feel comfortable so that they can join the conversation if they wish.
