About Jonny
Hi! My name is Jonny and I have been playing piano, keyboards, and synthesizers in several contexts ranging from traditional jazz and experimental improvisation, to cumbia/salsa bands and experimental pop/rock projects. Live performance plays a big part in my career as I continue to perform between Los Angeles, San Diego, Salt Lake City, and Paris (in February!). As a composer, I have premiered original pieces for a variety of instrumentations in San Diego, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Amsterdam, and Madrid. I'm currently working on an experimental opera adapting Euripides' horrific tragedy Medea. I've also scored several short films and have taught courses on music production and film scoring to high schoolers in San Diego and courses on multiple musical histories to undergrads at UCSD. I enjoy producing and performing alongside my partner Kiki LaPomme in our band, Pigimichi, and we have enjoyed sharing our most recent release "Empty House (EP)" since moving to Los Angeles this past summer. Unfortunately, our home suffered smoke damage and our kids' school was lost in the Eaton fires, causing us to relocate to Orem, Utah for the time being. Utah has a special local music scene and I look forward to reconnecting with the community as a pianist and educator!

I teach piano and improvisation, delving into the rich histories of jazz, rock, and pop. We take time to play through technical exercises that serve as building blocks for theory and improvisation (scales, arpeggios). Additionally, I teach functional musicianship skills such as sight reading, playing by ear, theory, and harmony. As a composer, I like to encourage students to learn to make their own music, whether by composing with musical notation, creating and developing songs by memory, or using recording techniques and production software (Ableton, Logic, GarageBand). I typically don't teach classical at an advanced level, but am happy to work on classical repertoire at a basic level.
