About Kelsey
I have a bachelor of music degree (BMus) in flute performance and a Master of Arts in Music Theory degree. I am currently working towards my PhD in music theory at McGill. My primary instrument is the flute, although I also play the piano and the pipe organ. My first language is English, and I speak French at an advanced level (I am able to teach music lessons in French)l. My academic research interests lie in groove studies, chromatic harmony, music pedagogy, music cognition and perception, timbre, and rhythm studies. I have lots of teaching experience in a variety of classroom settings (one-on-one studio teaching, small group classroom teaching, running undergraduate tutorials and office hours). I also have experience leading large ensembles: I spent two years conducting a community orchestra and jazz band. Most of all, I'm passionate about music and learning. My top priority is to help you achieve your musical goals, whatever they may be!

Hi there! My name is Kelsey and I want to help you improve your musical skills.
Whether you want to learn to play an instrument, write your own music, improvise, or gain a more thorough understanding of the music you love to listen to, I’m here to help you out. During our meetings, we will draw on lots of different repertoire, including pieces that you enjoy or are learning to sing/play with the goal of growing the depth of your understanding of the music you're interacting with. I will also help you develop a solid set of analytical and practical skills that you can carry forward into your other musical endeavors, such as performance, composition, general listening activities, preparing for an audition or test, etc.
Lessons will also be tailored specifically to you: after our first meeting, I will design a curriculum of lessons based on your needs and musical motivations. My teaching style prioritizes a hands-on learning environment, so we will be working together through music theoretical activities to help you develop the tools and skills you need to be successful in achieving your musical goals. So, my lessons are widely accessible, suitable to anyone from the absolute beginner and up.
As I am currently working towards my PhD in music theory, I am knowledgeable about a wide range of musical systems and genres. I have lots of classroom teaching experience, both in-person and over Zoom. I have taught in undergraduate classes as a TA and as the primary instructor of both private and group lessons in a conservatory/studio setting. I also have experience preparing students for the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) exams in Theory and History.
To me, music theory at every level of learning is much more than labelling musical structures. Music theory is a collection of tools that you can use to investigate questions about how music works. Most of all, I want to encourage you to be creative, curious, and excited about the music you're engaging with. Let's work together and dive into some music!

I was lucky enough to have Kelsey as my TA for a university-level chromatic harmony course and she was very detailed, patient, understanding, and generous with her time! I would recommend her to anyone.
I can’t recommend Kelsey enough! When she served as my TA for a music theory course on chromatic harmony and voice leading, Kelsey displayed great talents in problem solving, approaching music theory problems from multiple angles, and adapting to meet me at the conceptual level I was at. When I met with her during office hours on a weekly basis, Kelsey handled my abundant questions with skill and patience. She solidified my understanding of applied chords and diatonic modulation, local chromaticism (modal mixture and altered subdominants), and sequences and chromatic modulation in larger structures, from binary, ternary, and rondo forms to movements that make use of the sonata principle. Her communication style was effective and clear, and I have nothing but praise for her. Because of Kelsey’s tutelage, which involved a healthy amount of collaboration and demonstration of how to conduct these types of music analysis, I now have a better understanding of chromatic voice leading principles, contrapuntal elaboration of phrase models through chromatic intensification, tonicization, and sequence, and listening to connect these elements at different structural levels. It’s not just Kelsey’s thorough knowledge and pedagogical skills that impress me, however. She is a joy to work with because of her amazingly positive attitude and eagerness for her students to succeed. Her can-do attitude and team building skills were also necessary and valued not just by myself, but by her other students as well who turned to her for additional help during class time and during office hours when they needed it. I am confident without reservation that Kelsey is an excellent educator. As a tirelessly creative and passionate individual, she will always leave you in a better place than where you started. She is awesome!
Kelsey was my TA for a theory class at UBC during the pandemic, when everything was on Zoom. I wasn't sure how things would go with online classes, but Kelsey was one of the BEST TA's ever, and the entire class liked her. What is so great about Kelsey, is that she makes learning fun, and she understands the subject material at a high level, so her explanations are very clear and easy to understand. She also has a happy, bubbly personality that makes learning fun and she strives to instill confidence in her students. I would highly recommend Kelsey as a tutor or TA to any music student.
Kelsey is a phenomenal teacher who caters to the individual needs of her students. She is insightful, approachable, and, above all, caring. Her passion for music and its fundamentals is evident through her enthusiasm and knowledge in class and her willingness to adapt her lessons to meet students wherever they are in their musical journey.
