Sample Lesson Plan – Basic Science
Topic: States of Matter (Solid, Liquid, Gas)
Grade Level: Primary/Elementary
Time: 40 minutes
Subject: Basic Science
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
Identify the three basic states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas.
Describe at least one characteristic of each state.
Give real-life examples of solids, liquids, and gases.
Materials Needed
Ice cube (solid)
Water in a clear glass (liquid)
Balloon filled with air (gas)
Chart/flashcards with pictures (stone, juice, steam, etc.)
Lesson Procedure
A. Introduction (5 minutes)
Begin with a simple question: “Can you touch water? Can you hold air? What about a rock?”
Tell students that these are all examples of matter – anything that takes up space and has weight.
B. Presentation (10 minutes)
Show the ice cube → explain that solids have a definite shape.
Show the glass of water → explain that liquids take the shape of the container.
Show the balloon with air → explain that gases spread out and fill the space available.
Use a chart to reinforce the three states.
C. Guided Practice (10 minutes)
Activity: Place items (e.g., rock, juice box, perfume, pencil, milk, steam from hot water, etc.) and ask students to classify them into solid, liquid, or gas.
Allow students to come to the board or sort flashcards into categories.
D. Application (10 minutes)
Quick group game: "Mystery Matter" – teacher describes an item (“You can drink it, it flows, and it takes the shape of the glass”), students answer liquid.
Ask students to share examples from home (food, objects, weather).
E. Conclusion (5 minutes)
Review: Matter exists as solid, liquid, or gas.
Ask: “What state of matter is the air we breathe? What about the juice you drink?”
End with a fun fact: “Water is special because it can be solid (ice), liquid (water), and gas (steam)!”
Assessment
Oral questioning during activities.
Exit ticket: Each student says one example of a solid, liquid, and gas before leaving.
