About Isla
I have 9 years of experience teaching piano, holding a B.Mus in Piano Performance and an M.Mus in Music Education. I have worked with students across all levels, from beginners learning foundational skills to advanced performers preparing for recitals and ensemble projects. My teaching philosophy combines technical instruction, expressive guidance, and performance preparation to cultivate well-rounded pianists capable of expressing musical ideas confidently.
I emphasise patience, individualised instruction, and encouragement. Lessons integrate technique, theory, repertoire, improvisation, and ensemble experience to foster holistic musical growth. My aim is to create a welcoming and motivating learning environment where students feel supported and inspired to reach their full potential.
Outside teaching, I perform, study diverse repertoire, and explore contemporary pedagogical methods to enhance my lessons. Bringing these experiences into teaching helps students connect technical skill with musical expression. Witnessing learners grow in confidence, artistry, and performance ability remains the most rewarding part of my work.

Piano lessons are most effective when students learn to combine technical precision with expressive creativity and ensemble awareness. My teaching focuses on finger technique, sight-reading, scales, chords, pedal technique, musical phrasing, improvisation, and duet or ensemble playing. Each session balances structured exercises with creative exploration, encouraging learners to develop technical ability while nurturing artistic interpretation. Lessons include repertoire practice, performance simulations, and feedback to build both confidence and skill.
Lesson structure is customised to the student’s level. Beginners focus on basic finger positioning, note recognition, rhythm, and simple melodies. Intermediate learners refine technique, phrasing, dynamics, and musical expression. Advanced students engage with complex repertoire, improvisation, ensemble coordination, and performance preparation. Consistent practice strategies, personalised feedback, and structured exercises ensure continual improvement and expressive growth.
Studying piano fosters technical proficiency, artistic expression, and performance confidence. Students develop musical independence, interpretive skill, and collaborative awareness. My goal is to create a supportive, engaging, and inspiring environment where learners achieve mastery, confidence, and a lifelong appreciation for piano music.
