About Alberto
Colombian pianist Luis Alberto Peña has concertized in major venues in Austria, Italy, Colombia, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Panama, Canada and the USA, with equal dedication to the solo, concerto and chamber music repertoire of all periods. He has appeared as soloist with, among others, the Bogota Philharmonic Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra of Panama, the Meadows Symphony Orchestra, the UW-Madison Symphony Orchestra, the Camerata Dallas. He has been a prizewinner in piano competitions in Colombia, Venezuela, Costa Rica and the USA and has received several prestigious awards and scholarships. Alberto recently earned a doctorate in music at the Université de Montréal under the tutelage of eminent pianist Dang Thai Son. Previously, he received degrees and multiple honors from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University, Southern Methodist University and the Fundación Universitaria Juan N. Corpas (Bogota), where his main teachers were Christopher Taylor, Boris Slutsky, Joaquín Achúcarro and Pilar Leyva. He has also participated in numerous masterclasses with world-renowned artists and prestigious summer programs, such as the Mozarteum Sommerakademie, the Accademia Chigiana, Bowdoin, Orford and Domaine Forget. Alberto is a devoted and sought-after teacher, having maintained a busy teaching schedule for more than a decade in Canada and the United States. His comprehensive knowledge of the piano repertoire and extensive performance experience has provided him with invaluable teaching tools. Teaching students of all ages, levels, and backgrounds has led him to develop effective strategies to enhance each person’s sensitivity and technical abilities, promote mindful and efficient practicing and consistently produce confident performances. Most importantly, he strives to instill a true love for music in all his students, which he considers the most important factor in determining the long-lasting and meaningful impact of their involvement with this art form. Alberto chooses appropriate materials, projects and repertoire based on the abilities, interests and needs of each student and has successfully prepared many of them for public concerts, competitions and for the Royal Conservatory of Music examinations. Alberto currently teaches at the Montréal Piano Studio, the Académie Piano Vertu and, during the summers, at the Camp Musical Tutti. He has also taught piano, music history and music theory at the Université de Montréal, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Mountain View College.

“My goal as a teacher is to help my students to realize their full potential and become independent, thoughtful and well-rounded learners. Taking into account the concrete expectations and goals of each student, I ensure that they understand what each of the skills that they acquire contributes to their development. I assess each student’s specific level of musicianship and pianistic ability, as well as their particular musical affinities, in order to determine their individual needs. Through my studies with eminent musicians and pedagogues, I have gained valuable insights on the wide-ranging demands of piano playing, and have become aware of the need to remain open to multiple approaches in order to deal with different students, repertoires, situations, and challenges. Thanks to my thorough knowledge of the classical piano literature and substantial exposure to different teaching traditions, I am able to confidently choose the most convenient materials and methodology for each student I work with. I am convinced that it is necessary to simultaneously address the intellectual, physical and emotional aspects of piano playing throughout every stage of my students’ training, providing them with tools to make valid interpretative and technical decisions, and deal with a broad range of musical styles. I prioritize the formation of efficient and reliable habits for practicing, which will not only keep them in optimal physical shape, but also stimulate their musical thinking. Besides teaching them techniques for score-reading, memorizing, coping with performance anxiety, and overcoming pianistic difficulties, I ask my students to have specific goals for every practice session, and provide concrete examples on how to establish these and self-evaluate their progress.”

Perfect! Luis is a real pro and has extensive knowledge about piano technique and interpretation. I am a relatively good amateur pianist and Luis has given me the challenge to take my playing to a new level.
