About Jason

I’m Jason, and I work especially well with piano students who are tired of feeling that every new piece requires starting from zero again. I want you to begin recognizing familiar structures: a repeated bass pattern, a chord shape appearing in another inversion, a sequence moving through different notes, or a rhythmic idea you have already encountered elsewhere.

I am also interested in the difference between being able to play something and actually owning it. If you can only play a passage after beginning ten measures earlier, we have more work to do. If you can play it slowly but have no idea what harmony is underneath your fingers, we can make that knowledge stronger. If the piece falls apart whenever you become nervous, we will build more than one route through it.

I will often ask you to explain what you see in a passage before we decide how to practice it. Not because I want to turn the lesson into a theory test, but because noticing the pattern can eliminate a surprising amount of unnecessary work.

If you are a student who reads reasonably well, practices seriously, and still wonders why pieces take so long to become secure, this approach is meant to solve that exact frustration.

If you can play a piece while looking at the score but feel completely lost when the page disappears, I do not assume you have a bad memory. Often, the piece was never stored in a useful way. You may have memorized a long chain of finger movements without knowing where you are inside the music. We will build memory landmarks instead. You will identify important harmonic changes, repeated patterns, phrase beginnings, and several places where you should be able to start immediately. If you can only begin at measure one, the piece is not yet securely learned.

One exercise I use is the random-start test. Once a section is reasonably comfortable, I will ask you to begin from different points: the start of the second phrase, the harmony change in the middle, the final two measures, or even the left hand alone from a specific location. This exposes gaps that normal run-through practice can hide. More importantly, it means that if something goes wrong during a performance, you have several mental places to reconnect instead of feeling like the entire piece disappeared.

We will also work on balance between the hands. A common piano problem is that both hands are technically correct but equally loud, so the melody becomes buried inside the accompaniment. We may practice what I call full voice and shadow voice: the melodic hand plays with normal tone while the accompanying hand touches the keys as lightly as possible while remaining controlled. Then we gradually bring the accompaniment back until you find the point where it supports the melody without covering it. Later we apply the same idea inside a single hand when the melody and accompaniment appear together.

For passages that feel rhythmically unstable, we may remove pitch from the equation completely. You can tap the two hands on the closed keyboard or on your lap and reproduce only the coordination pattern. If the rhythm cannot survive without the notes, then the notes were hiding the real problem. Once the hands understand the timing relationship, we restore the keyboard. This is particularly effective for students who keep slowing down at the same spots even though they technically know every note.
