About Thomas
I was rather surprised when I learned I had achieved a 7 in HL English Language and Literature. I was always told that ELL was not as strenuous of a class as English Literature, and in some regards this is correct. However, the many transferable skills of understanding the production and use of language coupled with the knowledge of literary conventions, themes, and so forth allowed me to develop a better grasp on the vague subject that is 'English'.
Since graduating, I've been working with colleagues of mine at an independent radical journal, editing and producing polemical writing, co-hosting a podcast, and spending my free time writing poetry and music. Therefore, all the skills I once thought superfluous became quite necessary, and I hope to bring you that realisation through my classes.

In hour-long sessions, I hope to work with IB students to develop their close reading skills, literary criticism, expository and comparative writing, as well as garner a genuine passion for 'English' that doesn't get lost in dense texts (like mine so nearly was).
When I 'teach' or explain anything I like to begin with broad concepts and then demonstrate their use in particular texts and contexts which helps consolidate understanding.
I have a particular interest in the knowledge and application of textual convention - as McLuhan says, "the medium is the message."
Having been through the IB, I also understand the importance of spending more time in discussion about the learning than doing the learning itself, this pedagogy is what I hope will set me apart from other tutors.
