About Tyler

Tyler Danielle Potter is a British artist, designer, writer and mentor whose practice spans drawing/painting, constructed textiles, mixed-media installation, curation and creative writing.

She graduated with a First-Class BA (Hons) in Fine Art from the University for the Creative Arts (Canterbury) in 2020, where she was awarded the CRATE Studio and Project Space Graduate Award. During her undergraduate studies, she completed a placement at Cyprus College of Art and held her first solo exhibition, Soft and Found, at The Brewery Tap Project Space in Folkestone.

Following her BA, Potter spent three years living and travelling across Europe aboard a 28ft sailboat. This formative period deepened her relationship with landscape, sensory experience and cross-cultural exchange, themes that continue to inform her practice. During this time, she developed her work independently, taking commissions and building her understanding of sustainable creative enterprise.

In 2024, she completed her MA in Contemporary Art Practice at the Royal College of Art. While at the RCA, her work was presented at a Tate Lates event and she curated a group exhibition featuring sixteen artists as part of her research into collaborative and community-led practice.

Alongside her studio work, Potter mentors art and design students, including BA and MA applicants developing conceptual portfolios for leading art schools. Drawing on her experience as an exhibiting artist, RCA graduate and art teacher, she supports emerging artists in refining their visual language, articulating critical positions, sequencing work and building confidence throughout their studies.

She continues to expand her practice through exhibitions, commissions, experimental writing and research-driven projects.

Find out more about Tyler

  • 1) When did you start practicing? How did this passion find you?

I've loved art and creativity since I was a young child, I just can't get enough of it. I had a teacher at school who really pushed me to believe in my abilities and pursue art education at higher levels. It's very rewarding to be able to provide this kind of encouragement for others myself now.
  • 2) Which artists or works affect you the most?

I'm particularly fond of abstract expressionism by artists such as Agnes Martin and Yayoi Kusama, as well as work by other abstract artists like Hilma af Klint and Louise Bourgeois. I'm also really interested in Denise Treizman, Melinda Laszczynski, Vanessa Freitag, Laura Soto, Annie Albers, Sheila Hicks and Amie McNee. My favourite artwork is a collage by Eugenia Loli which I don't know the name of.
  • 3) What are the qualities and skill required to succeed in this area?

Passion and determination are key, as well as patience and consistency. Paying attention to detail is also essential.
  • 4) What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?

Focus on maintaining a consistent practice and taking small steps towards big goals. Try new things, play with different materials and make sure you're enjoying the journey. Stay curious and open-minded. Inspiration is everywhere, don't forget to notice it and really take it in. Most importantly, trust the process and believe in the value of your work.
  • 5) How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?

I feel at peace when I'm creating and see art-making as a meditative process. It makes me happy. Experiencing the work of others is just as valuable as the production of your own.
  • 6) What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?

Completing my MA in Contemporary Art Practice at the Royal College of Art in London and having my work shown at a TATE Lates event are definitely top. Curating a group show displaying the work of 16 different artists, myself included, as part of my MA research was an incredible experience as well.

Being selected for CRATE Studio and Project Space's 2020 Graduate Award, completing a month-long placement at Cyprus College of Art and my first solo show, 'Soft and Found', at The Brewery Tap Project Space in Folkestone are all definitely up there too.

I'm also very excited about some new projects that I'm currently planning.
  • 7) Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?

Yes, all of the time! I believe everyone is an artist and that sometimes people just need to have a bit more confidence in themselves to be able to discover their talents. It's always wonderful to see someone start to believe in themselves more and then watch this become evident in the quality of their work, it makes a huge difference.
  • 8) Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?

Listening and being patient, encouraging my students to speak for themselves and guide our sessions based on their personal interests and desires. I always present art as a way of understanding yourself and the world around you, a tool for exploration and discovery.
