About Tom 'Checkers'
I am an electronic music producer, classical composer and music education specialist. After my degree in Music and Masters in Composition, I worked as an Editor at the publisher Faber Music in both the classical music and education departments, producing works by some of the best composers in the world today and music education books for various instruments, theory, sight-reading, you-name-it. I am a DJ and techno producer and recently worked at the company FutureDJs – a music education company pioneering the use of DJ-ing to get children into and excited about music. I am co-author of the book 'FutureDJs: How to DJ' and have written the first ever graded DJ-ing exam syllabus, accredited by the London College of Music Examination.

My lessons are designed for electronic music producers and fans of dance/hip-hop/pop because we'll be learning music notation, theory and composition technique by looking at some of the best tracks in the dance and hip-hop back catalogue, anything from Dr Dre to Groove Armada. They'll be no nursery rhymes, you'll be reading and picking apart your favourite tracks, learning how they're made and the techniques that you can put into your own music. We'll also be looking back over the entire history of music, listening to extracts from important composers, periods and places, and discussing what they did, how they did it and how that has affected what you’re learning today. Main objectives: * understand the fundamentals of reading and writing music notation, including clefs, time signatures, key signatures, staves, notes, rhythms, articulation, all of that. You’ll be able to look at a score and understand everything that’s going on. * understand scales and how to build chords on top of them, and how to turn those chords into creative progressions for your music * have developed knowledge of the keyboard * be able to identify rhythms, types of chords and even intervals between notes BY EAR * develop knowledge of music history, including styles, genres, composers and periods I want to make music theory exciting and relevant to you and turn it into something that really enhances your appreciation and love of music. You can let me know if there are any topics in particular you would like to focus on, or even if there are specific songs you would like to break down and investigate. I look forward to hearing from you.

Tom has been my music theory teacher for a while now and he's been absolutely brilliant. I can play piano and guitar but never quite managed to get behind the theory of it all properly, and Tom made it all really easy to understand. He's amazing at explaining things in various ways and knows how to simplify complex theoretical knowledge. And when I still don't understand something, I feel like I can always ask more questions or ask for more examples.
I always thought music theory was quite dry, but Tom really managed to make it super fun and tailor the lessons to my personal musical tastes.View more recommendations
