About Kate
Music is my passion and I have been teaching and playing music for 30 years. My specialist area being jazz and teaching jazz improvisation. I am a friendly and empathic teacher and I have gained a huge amount of performance experience from playing in bands and musical combos with a variety of styles, ranging from classical, to pop and rock, through to reagae, world music and jazz. I have performed with the great British saxophonist Don Rendell and I was responsible for organising a house jazz band, with which he played, including myself. I worked for Essex Music Services for 8 years, teaching in Schools on a peripatetic basis, this gained me a huge amount of teaching experience. I have been running my private teaching practice for 30 years and I am very experienced in teaching children and adults. I teach alto, soprano and tenor saxophone to advanced level and clarinet to grade 7 (ABRSM) with descant recorder up to grade 2. I have also worked for Loughton Music Academy (1 year) and with Creative Music, Music SchooI, for a year (based in Sawbridgeworth). Also, in the past I ran a preschool music group called Noahs Arc and I also have experience in running a workshop for a local mixed ability childrens group, (including those with needs) called Sams Place Too. I have been involved in some recording session work for radio 3 and I have ran music workshops, both for Essex Music and the local community. I have played in festivals in France and England with a street band (The Peace Artistes) and a world music band called Soma. During my early performance days playing with local band, Harlow Concert Band, I won musician of the year award. I believe learning music should be a fun experience and that people learn better this way. I teach according to students individual learning styles, taking into account their different ways of learning and experience. I currently play with my own band, the Owen-Jones Jazz Quartet and with Robs Acoustic Emporium and I occasionally dep for the Barry Sapsford Big Band and the Mosaic Orchestra. I recently performed with Robs Acoustic Emporium at Phoenix Live in Harlow (January 2020) and previous to that, we have performed at local music festivals for the past 3 years. I also feature on one of their albums on saxophone and clarinet. The Owen-Jones Jazz Quartet last played at the Herald pub, during the Summer last year (2019) and since then we have been taking time of performing to rehearse, before going into a studio to record an album. I am experienced in entering students for ABRSM music exams and I have a 100 % pass rate. I hold an up to date enhanced DBS and I genuinely love teaching. I am adept at putting people at their ease, which ensures that they get the best out of their music lessons with me.

I use an individual teaching approach and I always play during my lessons to demonstrate examples to my students. I aim to take into account my students musical tastes, whilst ensuring that they learn the basics first. I teach my students how to sight read from scratch if necessary and also how to improvise if they wish to do so and when they are ready. I use fun musical activities such as question and answer phrases and ear training excercises, plus backing tracks. I will often encourage students to learn duets alongside me, which is good experience if and when they want to join a band, or group. This also improves musical timing and confdence. I also use a variety of music teaching books with backing tracks in general, which I feel keeps there interest and enthusiasm and prevents them for getting bored. I encourage regular practise for faster progression and again, this prevents boredom setting in.
I also organize an Annual concert for all of my students to take part in, no matter what level they have reached. I do not pressure people into taking music exams but I am experienced in this, if they wish to do so.

Kate it a great tutor! She is an extremely patient and caring person. Music is her passion and you soon realise that! She puts you at ease and is always encouraging and giving praise. I would recommend her for both adults and children.
Vikki Day xI have been having Sax lessons with Kate for over a year now, and what I have learnt is fantastic. Kate is great at understanding your level of learning and is great at playing along with you or playing new bits for you to give you an accurate understanding of a new piece. Now we have moved into a new space, Kate has now started on line training which is really working well and really keeping my interest in playing better. Kate is a great teacher who really understands and really gets the best out of you and for me really creates total enjoyment and understanding
Kate is a wonderful saxophonist and a patient and thoughtful teacher, who genuinely cares about her students and helping them to do their best. She is also an all round lovely person!
