About Jamie
Whilst studying at Durham University I developed a strong interest in the rich harmonies of jazz piano, playing in various bands and ensembles. I spent a year in Melbourne in 2016 where I studied under some of the best musicians in the city. After starting out tickling the ivories in a cocktail sort of setting, I began to take a more comedic path. Taking strong inspiration from the various musical comedians that Australia has produced, I began entertaining on the piano at various functions. My musical interests begin right back with Bach, as I have a deep respect for the historical lineage of music, and love playing through and teaching the classical repertoire as a result. More recently I have been working as a songwriter, with a small first project commissioned by the BBC last year. I am now working on developing my skills in song construction and lyric writing to perform more original work.

I will first help you to define a goal. We'll explore the different styles and choose a direction that is aligned with your musical interests and ambitions. From there we will form a plan as to how to reach this goal. We'll systematically break down the path into step-by-step pieces. With a clear roadmap in place, we can focus on enjoying the journey whilst progressing as efficiently as possible. Lessons are tailored to the varying abilities and needs of my students, but in general I like to build a good foundation of understanding behind the music we are learning rather than just learning by rote. We take pieces apart and figure out how they are constructed. This way concepts can be generalised and applied to future pieces, as well as potentially creating our own compositions. Learning to practise efficiently is perhaps the most important, yet often overlooked, factor in developing as a musician. As well as teaching theory and technique, I will teach practice techniques and the general principles of learning so that you can gradually reduce your reliance on having a teacher and take your own path.
