About Catherine
Call me Cat! I’m a recent Washington State alum with a passion for education, writing, and literature. I have worked with multiple published poets and authors throughout undergrad, and have extensive experience in leading workshop-style lessons and giving constructive, solution-based feedback.
Rather than providing an “umbrella” program with an expectation of mass adherence, I craft personalized curriculums around each student’s specific needs, work styles, and interests, bringing the mechanics of educational instruction to them.
As an educator, my primary goals are not only honing a student’s writing skills and reading comprehension, but inspiring a genuine, volitional enthusiasm for their own intellectual development to carry into all subjects of their education and life.

Primary Demographic: Elementary, Middle, and High School Advanced English & Creative Writing.
Programs begin with initial skill evaluation; addressing literacy, comprehension, critical thinking, and orthography. Evaluations will take 1-2 sessions, depending on meeting length. Additional progress-checks and tutor evaluations will be conducted intermittently throughout programs (4-6 weeks depending on session frequency and guardian preference).
Session Length: 90 minutes (flexible based on guardian preference/scheduling conditions)
Daily oral reading of passage/excerpt of text by student. (Nonfiction, upper-level fiction, classic literature, etc.) Texts are chosen with consideration of current skill level and student's personal interests.
Two comprehension questions presented and orally discussed to cultivate complete understanding of text content, craft, and forming connections to student’s life.
Students will choose one comprehension question discussed to independently craft a brief handwritten response (5-15 minutes, depending on question) based on oral discussion.
Solution-based student-led reflection on struggles and successes in craft and clarity of written comprehension response. Written feedback in the form of annotation and readers’ notes are provided.
Optional/Extended Session: Students are presented with a brief excerpt of creative/experimental work (creative nonfiction, fiction, poetry, etc.). Discussion of one specific craft/stylistic element featured in the piece. Students and I will work together to develop an outline for their own creative work specifically highlighting one craft element (ex; imagery, alliteration, syntax, irony, etc). Students will have brief individual writing time (5-10 minutes) based on outline. Student-led discussion of creative work optional based on student and guardian preference.
Remainder of Session: Focused assistance with current classwork/homework assignments to ensure proficient understanding and quality product. Reading and writing elements of non-Language Arts classes included.
