About Winson
I hold a doctoral degree in psychology, and my academic path has been grounded in mathematics from the start. Throughout my graduate training and professional career, I have worked daily with statistics, mathematical modeling, and programming in Python, R, and MATLAB. Math is not just a subject I teach; it is a tool I rely on every day, and I know firsthand how powerful it becomes once it truly makes sense.
Teaching has been part of my work for many years. I have taught at the university level as a teaching assistant, instructor, and guest lecturer, leading discussion sections, running exam reviews, and supporting students individually. I have also mentored students one on one, helping them build both their skills and their confidence. Explaining complex ideas clearly to people with different backgrounds and learning styles is something I genuinely enjoy and have practiced in many settings.
Students and parents can expect reliability and care from me. I come to every lesson prepared, keep track of each student's progress, and communicate openly about what we are working on and how things are going. I am patient and encouraging, and I take the time to understand each student's goals, strengths, and challenges. My lessons are built around one idea: math should make sense, not just produce answers. Rather than having students memorize procedures, I help them understand why each method works, so they can handle unfamiliar problems on their own. I ask students to talk through their thinking out loud, which shows me exactly where an idea breaks down. I use concrete examples, drawings, and real-world situations before moving to formal notation, and I break multi-step problems into small, manageable pieces so nothing feels overwhelming.
A typical lesson runs in four parts. We start with a short warm-up to review the previous session and check what stuck. Then I introduce or revisit the main concept, working through examples together and inviting questions along the way. Next, the student practices independently while I observe and give immediate, specific feedback. We finish by summarizing the key takeaways, and I set a few targeted practice problems so progress continues between lessons. For students preparing for a test, I adapt the structure around past exams and timed practice.
What sets me apart is the combination of a doctoral degree in psychology with extensive quantitative training. I use math, statistics, and programming every day, and I also understand how people learn, stay motivated, and get stuck. That matters most for students who feel anxious about math, who have lost confidence after falling behind, or who simply need a different explanation than the one they heard in class. I am patient, I adjust my pace to each student, and I make a point of recognizing progress so confidence grows alongside skill.
