I continued my education at UMass and earned my MS in computer science in 2019, taking time off in 2017 to work at NASA. I think the best approach to teaching is to find a project that excites the student and encourage them to think through problem solving from the ground up while providing direction and assistance when needed. In this way, the student learns both the basics and the practical application of those skills while building something they can be proud of.
