About Alex
I am an experienced Primary Teacher, having taught a range of classes throughout Scotland and Shanghai. My focus on phonics to build confidence in word building has reaped excellent results, with my students improving their reading and writing significantly. Having a background in ESL as well as the Currciulum for Excellence, I can offer a holistic and inclusive approach to learning literacy.

I offer literacy lessons to children of primary school age. In Scotland this would be Early through to Second Level. The Curriculum for Excellence is easily adaptable for all learners, as it gives more space than other Curriculums for teachers to hone their lessons to the learners and focus on what the individual needs to succeed. I base my literacy lessons first on building basic phonological awareness, including rhyme, alliteration, sound placement and blending. By consolidating these key skills we can build our knowledge of the individual sounds and digraphs swiftly and confidently. For older students, my focus on questioning the texts is key. By considering the choices a writer has made - from punctuation and grammar to adjective choice or paragraph length, we can unpick the skills needed to become a successful writer who loves putting pencil to paper and loves reading the written work of others.
