About Ali

Assalamu Alaikum — I'm Ali, a native Arabic speaker from Egypt and a graduate of Al-Azhar University, one of the oldest and most respected centres of Islamic learning in the world. I memorised the entire Qur'an as a child and hold an Ijazah in Hafs Riwayah, which qualifies me to teach Qur'an recitation and memorisation to others.

For almost seven years, I've taught students of all ages and backgrounds — from a 4-year-old just learning the letters to a 70-year-old reciting for the first time in decades — across the UK, USA, Canada, Malaysia, and Kenya. That range has taught me something important: no two students learn the same way, so I don't teach everyone the same way either. I take the time to understand what each student needs and shape my approach around that.

My lessons cover reading the Qur'an accurately, developing fluency, mastering Tajweed rules, memorisation, recitation, and building basic Arabic vocabulary along the way.

When it comes to memorisation, I keep a simple, steady rhythm: we begin each class by reviewing what came before, then move on to a new section which we repeat together ten times, and I ask students to send me a recording and a photo of that section so I can check their progress between lessons.

For recitation and reading, I like to walk through the lesson clearly first, work through real examples together, and finish with a short task that helps the lesson stick.

I teach from a fully equipped setup — reliable internet, a graphic tablet for writing and correcting in real time, a professional camera and mic, and up-to-date teaching resources — so lessons run smoothly no matter where you're joining from.

More than anything, I care about consistent communication and making sure students and I are working as a team. Progress in the Qur'an takes patience on both sides, and I'm committed to giving my full effort to help every student get there.

Learning to read the Qur'an properly doesn't have to feel overwhelming, and it definitely doesn't have to be rushed. I build every lesson around where the student actually is — whether that means starting from the Arabic alphabet, working through Tajweed rules one at a time, or refining recitation that's already fairly strong.

Children tend to respond best to short, encouraging steps with plenty of repetition, so I keep their lessons light and interactive without losing focus. Adults usually prefer a bit more explanation — understanding why a rule works, not just how to apply it — so I adjust the pace and depth accordingly.

Whatever stage you're at, the goal stays the same: steady, genuine progress you can feel from one lesson to the next, in an environment where making mistakes is simply part of learning, not something to worry about.

Your first lesson is free — a chance for us to get to know each other, talk through your goals, and figure out the right starting point together.

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I speak the Arabic language because of all of the above and more, it's my mother tongue.

  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

The Arabic language has been affected by many historical events, but there is an event that has shown the importance of the Arabic language, it's the revelation of the Quran.
When the Quran was sent down to the Earth, in the Arabic language, and challenged the entire world then the characteristics of the Arabic language has been changed.

There are many popular phrases that I like and use to keep in my mind.

It matters to me because it is my living.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

Like all languages, the main difficulty in the Arabic language is the grammar, and the best way that helps to make the process easier is to understand the internal meaning of the rule, then that's would be easier to use it.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

Once I was learning a rule of the Arabic language, then I met a difficulty and I struggled to remember the details of this rule, so I asked my friend, he said, I know someone who can fix it for you, he picked up me to an old teacher he was teaching us in the primary school, this teacher had explained the Internal meaning of the rule, then I didn't forget it anymore.
Since that time I used to teach my students by explaining the internal meaning of the rules.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

The Arabic language is unique, it has more than 20 accents, so I used to travel to discover other accents to increase my knowledge and develop my skills.
