About Juan

My name is Juan, and I want to be upfront about the way I teach before you book a lesson, because I think it's important that students know what they're getting into.

I'm demanding. Not in a way that's unkind or discouraging — but in a way that means I hold my students to a genuine standard and I don't pretend they've reached it before they have. I notice mistakes and I say so. I hear when something isn't quite right and I point it out specifically, because letting it slide is the easiest way to make sure it never gets fixed. If you're looking for a teacher who's going to make every session feel breezy and effortless, I'm probably not your person. If you're looking for a teacher who's going to make you genuinely better — I'd love to work with you.

I've been teaching violin for over ten years. The instrument attracted me for a lot of reasons, but the one that's stayed with me the longest is this — the violin is brutally honest. You can't fake a good tone. You can't approximate good intonation. You can't bluff your way through a passage that requires technique you don't actually have. It tells the truth about your playing in a way that very few instruments do. And I think that honesty is one of its greatest qualities, both as something to perform on and as something to teach.

My approach is built on two things that I believe in deeply. The first is fundamentals. The violin more than almost any other instrument is an instrument where the foundation determines the ceiling — where things you establish in the early stages of learning will either support or limit everything you try to do later. Bow hold, posture, left hand position, intonation habits — these aren't details. They're the architecture. And we get them right, even if it takes longer than a student would prefer.

The second is challenge. Not constant challenge — that just leads to frustration. But deliberate, periodic challenge that sits above a student's current level and gives them something real to reach for. The kind of challenge that makes a student discover capabilities they didn't know they had. I introduce this carefully and I time it intentionally. But I introduce it. Because a student who never gets pushed past their comfort zone never finds out where their actual limit is. And in my experience, that limit is almost always further than they thought.

Violin lessons with me are structured, honest, and always focused on what actually moves the needle.

We start every session with foundational technique. Bow arm, left hand, posture, tone production — the things that the rest of the lesson depends on. I watch carefully during this section because it's where most of the information about what's happening in a student's playing lives. Small things show up here — tension in the shoulder, inconsistency in bow speed, a slight misalignment in the left hand — that have big consequences later. I catch them here, while the session is fresh, so they don't get buried in the more complex work that follows.

From there we move into repertoire and focused technique work. This is where my feedback is most direct. I listen to everything and I comment on everything that matters — intonation, rhythm, bow distribution, tone quality, musical phrasing. Not in a way that's overwhelming, but in a way that's honest. Students always know exactly what was right and exactly what wasn't, and they always know why.

The challenge component comes in periodically — not every lesson, but regularly enough that students are always aware that the ceiling is being raised. I'll bring in a passage or a technique that's genuinely demanding. Something that requires more than a student currently has. They won't get it immediately and that's completely fine — that's not the point. The point is that engaging with something at the edge of your ability, even without fully conquering it, accelerates development in ways that staying inside your comfort zone simply doesn't.

After every session there's a detailed, specific practice plan. What to work on, how to approach it, what to listen for, how long to spend on each thing. The lesson is where we work together. The practice plan is what makes it stick.
