About Matthew

Welcome.

As a highly qualified English teacher with over 20 years of national and international experience, I am deeply committed to helping every student achieve their full potential — with particular expertise in supporting students with additional educational needs.

For those preparing for class or exams, effective, structured preparation can make all the difference. My outcome-focused lessons are carefully tailored to each learner, ensuring clarity, confidence, and measurable progress towards their target grades.

Support includes:

Structured, scaffolded essay writing approaches
Clear visual frameworks and step-by-step modeling
Reduced cognitive overload through targeted instruction
Exam technique broken into manageable, repeatable processes
Confidence-building through predictable lesson routines
Strength-based teaching that builds on each student’s abilities
Lessons are calm, supportive, and highly structured — helping students feel secure while developing independence and academic resilience.
Experience from Within: An Edge in Exam Preparation

My experience extends beyond teaching into exam development and marking, providing students with valuable insight into how assessments are designed and graded.

Official Examiner – Experience examining Irish State Exams up to Leaving Certificate Higher Level.

Exam Creation – Involvement in designing written and oral examinations for the European Baccalaureate.

High-Stakes Curricula Expertise – Extensive experience navigating the demands of the Leaving Certificate, Junior Cycle, and European Baccalaureate syllabi.

This insider perspective is particularly beneficial for students who need explicit guidance on how marks are earned.

Proven Professional & Academic Experience

My background spans public education (including school development initiatives) and the private sector, ensuring a polished, professional service grounded in high standards.

Corporate clients have included global brands such as Louis Vuitton, Citi Bank, and Hewlett Packard, where clarity of communication and precision were essential.

A Methodology Focused on Understanding and Progress

My teaching approach is:

Student-centered and highly personalized

Rigorous but supportive

Focused on critical thinking and genuine understanding

Explicit in teaching exam technique

Support is available across:

Poetry

Drama

Comparative texts

Literary analysis

Narrative, descriptive, and persuasive writing

Lessons are interactive and dialogic, with clear, actionable feedback so students always understand their next step.

Specialist Support in Special Educational Needs (SEN)

A central focus of my practice is supporting students with additional learning needs, including dyslexia, autism (ASC), ADHD, and anxiety-related barriers to learning.

I understand that bright, capable students can struggle in traditional classroom settings — not because of ability, but because they need the right strategies.

Inclusive Support: Learning for Every Student

Every learner deserves to feel capable and understood. I am committed to providing inclusive, differentiated instruction that builds both skill and confidence.

Whether your goal is to secure a higher grade, overcome learning challenges, or rebuild academic confidence, you are investing in experienced, individualized guidance with a strong track record of results.

Reach out to discuss your academic goals and how we can work together to achieve them.

A Methodology Built for Achievement.
Every session is built on a dialogic and interactive framework. Rather than passive listening, you will engage in critical discussion that mirrors university-level seminars. This approach fosters the independent thinking required to achieve top-tier results.

I specialize in:
Advanced Essay Scaffolding: I provide bespoke frameworks for narrative, descriptive, and persuasive writing. We don't just "write essays"—we architect them to meet high academic standards.
Deep Textual Analysis: We dive deep into poetry, drama, and comparative studies, using sophisticated linguistic analysis to elevate your written responses.

Inclusive and Adaptive Support.
I am deeply committed to neurodiversity. My classroom is a differentiated environment, meaning I adapt my teaching style to suit your specific processing needs. I provide specialized scaffolding and visual supports that remove barriers to learning, ensuring that your intellectual potential is never hindered by your learning profile.

Flexible Formats for Focused Success.
Whether you prefer the intensive focus of one-on-one sessions or the dynamic energy of small groups (2–4 students), each lesson is a high-expectation environment. We focus on clarity, meticulous feedback, and actionable goals.
