About Faye
I am a Mathematics tutor with 8 years of experience and an MMath degree. I have taught over 290 students across all levels and have a specific reputation for producing significant grade improvement within a short time in students who have previously made little progress despite studying hard. My own experience of finding Mathematics challenging before developing genuine understanding informs my teaching — I understand the specific psychological and intellectual obstacles that prevent progress, and I am unusually effective at diagnosing and removing them. My Mathematics teaching is structured to produce measurable, verifiable progress rather than the subjective experience of understanding, because the latter without the former does not translate into examination performance. I use diagnostic testing at the start of every new student relationship to establish precise knowledge of what the student can and cannot do with reliable accuracy, then build a lesson sequence that addresses gaps in order of their foundational priority. My approach to A-Level pure mathematics teaches the interconnections between topics — how complex numbers connect to trigonometry, how calculus connects to graph sketching, how algebra connects to proof — because students who see Mathematics as a coherent web of connected ideas perform substantially better on challenging examination questions than those who see it as a collection of separate techniques. Applied mathematics in my teaching is always connected to its physical meaning: statistics are about uncertain knowledge, mechanics is about the physical world, and decision mathematics is about optimal choice — understanding these connections makes the mathematics feel purposeful and the interpretation questions feel natural. I require students to mark their own work using mark schemes before I review it, because the exercise of judging whether their own response would earn marks develops self-assessment accuracy that improves future examination performance. My teaching goal is a student who improves by at least one full grade boundary within the first three months of working with me.
