About Thom
I am a PhD student at Imperial College London, at the Institute of Chemical Biology and Department of Chemistry, investigating novel photochemical techniques to study the interactions of DNA G-quadraplexes in living cells.
I grew up in a very international environment living in 6 countries, before completing my International Baccalaureate studies at St. John's International School in Belgium. I completed my IB in 2016 before heading to the University of Cambridge (St. Catharine's College) to read the 4-year Natural Sciences Bachelor and Masters courses. After graduating in the summer of 2020, I moved to the Technische Universität München, Germany to work as a research assistant for 10 months in the labs of Prof. Sieber and Dr. Hacker investigating antibiotics with novel modes of action. In September 2021, I started my PhD studies at Imperial College London.
I have just over a year of formal tutoring experience in Maths, Chemistry, Physics. However, I have been involved in teaching environments throughout my undergraduate years at university. While in Munich, I worked part-time as a tutor with 4 full-time students, tutoring the following subjects IGCSE Chemistry, IB Chemistry (HL & SL), IGSCE Physics, IB Physics (HL & SL) and IGSCE Maths. I aim to cater to the needs of my students, finding the teaching methods which suits them best. This allows me to be flexible in my sessions to ensure the best results. However, my approach generally involves an interactive overview of the topic, starting with the theoretical concepts within their comfort zone before tackling the more challenging and difficult parts of the syllabus. Following a good grasp of the topic, I ask my students to apply their understanding to a problem set, where we would typically work through a few problems together, aiming to understand what the questions are asking and how to approach the solution. This quickly progresses to answering more challenging questions which require creative solutions. These steps, I believe, are crucial when preparing for exams (such as the IB, A-level and IGCSE) which often require a rigorous understanding of the topic and a systemic approach to tackling complex problems. Closer to examination dates, I begin to incorporate practice exam questions into my sessions to explore similarities between questions, time pressures and how to avoid common errors. I am enthusiastic about education and feel I have the knowledge, passion and patience to deliver a great tutoring service across a number of subjects and abilities.
Furthermore, during my time in the lab, I helped supervise and guide bachelor studies students and interns with practical and taught courses. Alongside my own research, I demonstrated novel experimental and data analytical techniques to students less familiar with the field. In addition to being part of a group which provided 1 hour tuition sessions every two weeks on the current lecture series. These experiences have helped me develop very personalised, successful approaches to teaching as I watched my students build on their ability to work as independent scientists.
Aside from very much enjoying my PhD project, during my free time I massively enjoy being outdoors as much as possible. I have been part of a football team for as long as I can remember, having played during school and university at a variety of levels. Additionally, I am a massive sailor having represented the Belgian national team at a youth level. However, living in London and pursuing other interested, ultimately forced me to pause my sailing ambitions and seek out hobbies which were easier to do.
