About Caitlin
I am studying English at the University of Southampton and I chose to do this as since I was a little girl I have loved to get swept up by a book. At school, I always struggled with exams and the pressure of timed writing but since my A-Levels, I have mastered techniques, that I believe have really helped me in applying to University. I previously worked for another company in online group tutoring of secondary school-age students of all ages and feel I can bring this to the table.

The way I like to structure my lessons would be student-led, I would like them to voice their concerns about particular aspects of the subject they are struggling with or a certain book or question they found difficult so then I can structure my lesson around exactly what will help them. In this sense, I will definitely be able to boost confidence in the students that they can tackle a range of exam questions with simple ways of thinking. I personally engage very well with visual aids such as spider diagrams and colourful plans which help me to split up a daunting exam question into sections, this helped me a lot as I was able to condense this way of thinking when it came to exams to create 5-minute plans before writing a question. I cannot stress how much planning before writing enhances your work even if it is a few words to express a structure it makes your writing much more sophisticated and well structured. I often like to use my first session as a 'get to know with my student, give them a type of essay question or exam paper and see how they work through it, so I can gauge what they are like as a student. I like my students to feel comfortable knowing they can ask any questions and that we will always cover what they want to be tackled. I find the most effective lessons are the ones with lots of activities using both reading and writing to keep my students engaged for the full session and my lessons are always pre-planned based on what I and the student have identified for the next week. I like to use a range of resources such as exam papers, exam board content, worksheets, spoken activities, and reading activities depending on where the student is struggling the most. I will measure their progress via the basis of the mark schemes for their specific exam board by examining each session which criteria they are hitting and which they aren't.
