About Rob
like a lesson to begin with something you want the music to say. You might want a melody to sound calmer, an entrance to feel confident, or the ending of a phrase to stop sounding abrupt. I help turn that intention into decisions you can actually make with your hands. If the words feel too abstract, I demonstrate two versions and let you describe the difference in your own language before we choose a useful instruction.
I do not expect you to remember a long chain of corrections while you play. I choose one cue that belongs at the right moment, such as preparing the bow before an entrance or listening for the next interval. For a younger learner that cue might be a simple drawing; for a teenager or adult it might be a mark in the score. I want the reminder to help you anticipate, rather than make you feel that someone is constantly interrupting your playing.
I make room for an attempt that tells us what is happening, even when it sounds unfinished. When something goes wrong, I help you trace it back to the decision just before it, and we choose a manageable adjustment together. You can arrive with your first few notes, a piece you have returned to after a break, or demanding repertoire you want to refine. I keep the explanation connected to music you can hear, and I want you to leave with a clear idea of how to continue exploring it independently.

I help you give each phrase a destination before your bow begins moving. We might sing a short melody, decide which note carries its strongest feeling, and draw a simple line showing where the sound should grow and settle. Then I help you match that shape to the amount of bow you use. A child playing a first tune can explore one long sound and its ending; a returning or advanced player can use the same idea to give a complicated phrase direction instead of treating every note equally.
If you reach the important note and discover that you have almost no bow left, playing the whole phrase again may only repeat the problem. I mark where the bow should be at two or three points, then help you travel between those points at a comfortable speed. We also practise changing strings while keeping the intended phrase shape, so a crossing becomes part of the music rather than an interruption. This makes bow planning practical: you can hear the result and recognise which earlier decision gave you room to make it.
I connect reading and intonation to that forward sense of direction. Before a new finger lands, we listen to or sing the interval it needs to reach, then check it against a useful reference note. Beginners can start with a few recognisable sounds, while experienced students can work with shifts and less familiar harmonies. I adapt the explanation for children, teenagers and adults, and leave you with a short practice route through your piece: where to listen ahead, where to plan your bow, and how to check the result without stopping after every note.
