About Maisie
More than anything, I am passionate about ideas and the freedom to develop and communicate them in an impactful and satisfying way. I have a developed personal interest in the intersection between philosophy, literature and the visual arts. I have a First Class BA in Philosophy from the University of Manchester and an MA with Distinction in Creative and Critical Writing from the University of Sussex. A review I wrote of a contemporary book on surrealist poetics was published in Textual Practice. Since graduating I have been doing freelance copyediting, recently finishing working through a 58,000-word manuscript for a non-fiction book about degrowth. I am a great believer in higher education but aware that it is only the beginning of a journey for many. For those currently in education, I hope to be able to supplement the lack of contact hours or one-on-one support that you may be experiencing. But I am happy to be approached by both university students and graduates looking to sharpen their critical thinking and writing faculties.

My online lessons aim to equip students with knowledge and skills that will allow them to confidently pursue academic study in humanities subjects at BA and MA level or to produce persuasive non-fiction writing for commercial purposes beyond higher education. I want to guide students through the methods and mechanisms that produce sophisticated critical writing, from reading and research to planning, drafting and editing. I propose an initial session to discuss your project, what you would like to communicate and achieve with your writing, and any obstacles or challenges you anticipate. With that information we can work together on an initial plan. I would then recommend a follow-up session to discuss the progress of your project. Having worked for a year since my Masters as a freelance copyeditor, I can also provide a proofreading and copyediting service. My hope is that you go away from our time together feeling able, as far as possible, to objectively evaluate your own writing, and empowered to continue independent research.
