About Owen
I am currently a student at the University of Oxford, studying French and Linguistics. I live in both Manchester and Oxford.
I struggled at GCSE (and even at the start of A Levels) and did not think that I would be able to reach the top grades. However, I found that just putting in that little bit more effort can yield extraordinary results. I believe that the one-on-one environment of tutoring is what can really help those who may not be reaching their full potential, or do not know how to. The classroom setting simply does not work for some students (me included!) and tutoring is a great way to put them on a level playing field with their peers.

I achieved an A* grade in both my English Language and French A Levels. You can expect our lessons to last one hour (although I am happy to extend this if you wish).
For English, we may look at a passage together, perhaps an extract of fiction or a newspaper article, and attempt to decipher the overall meaning(s) and how exactly it is conveyed. I may also ask that you respond to a creative writing prompt, and we can discuss the strengths and weaknesses of your piece, which will help you to produce one that is engaging and well-written. It will also be useful for the commentary section of the A Level, where you must explain how you met the particular genre of the creative piece and how you produced the desired effect.
For French, the lessons will undoubtedly be more varied and tailored to you. We may complete grammar exercises together, which are key for mastering the more difficult points of French grammar. For GCSE in particular (although I believe it can be a helpful exercise for all), we may go over a photo card, responding to questions asking what is in the photo and those personal to you, related to the theme of the photo. The role-play is another key aspect of the French GCSE. Here, I will provide a particular situation and we will have a short conversation in line with it. For A Level, we may have a discussion of a literary text or film. I am also happy to give you practice essay questions to do in your own time and go over your response in our session. If you are feeling up to it, we can have an hour of pure French conversation. It may be about current affairs in the francophone world, or anything you like — the former is particularly helpful for the independent research project portion of the French A Level.
