About Edward
Hello! Thank you for visiting my profile. I am a tutor in English Literature, available to tutor from Primary up to and including A-Level. I am currently studying an MA in Comparative Literature at King’s College London. I graduated from the University of Bristol with a First Class degree in English in 2015. I am also a writer / actor with experience playing supporting lead roles on the West End, and experience writing my own theatre and film projects. My interest in Literature is founded on its capacity to reach out to other art forms and issues in wider public discourse. As someone who has reached a career in creative arts through the study of literature, I maintain a passion for helping others link creative and academic practice. I am particularly interested in the connection between Literature, Theatre & Film. Within my MA, I have recently been studying 18th Century French Literature and Visual Art, considering its impact on political events leading up to and after the French Revolution. My tutoring style reflects the way I carry out my own work. I encourage students to read literature with an awareness of its connection to other art forms and its place in wider cultural/political landscapes. Far from detracting from the text at hand, I find this approach inspires a closer and more detailed response to any given text. As a tutor who is currently studying at MA level and working professionally as a writer / performer, I believe I am well placed to help students across a broad range of interests within the field of literature, from essay structure and language analysis to creative writing and performance pieces. I’d be very happy to discuss how I might be able to meet your individual requirements. Thank you for your consideration and I look forward to hearing from you! I have the pleasure of offering a reference for Ed Richards, who joined King Edward’s in 2006 and left in 2011, having been made Head of School, a considerable achievement in an institution of almost a thousand pupils. At A Level Ed achieved A* grades in English Literature and History and an A grade in French. For the English Literature examination at A2 Level, Ed was given full marks, and we felt that he was unfortunate not to be given a place at Oxford. He then justified our faith in him by graduating from Bristol University with a First Class Degree.
I taught Ed and found him to be a modest, highly intelligent and thoughtful student with a keen sense of humour. I can do no better than to point to the reference written by his tutor when Ed applied to university:
"As well as being a first rate academic, Edward was, in many ways, the ideal Head of School. Respected and liked by both staff and students, he was a charismatic yet modest leader, to whom peers and younger years naturally looked for guidance and judgement. Edward was at the heart of School life: he had a keen interest and often a central involvement in anything which combined initiative and energy with intellectual and cooperative challenge. He impressed with his talent for acting, which, when combined with his strong vocal skills, produced powerful performances. He travelled widely and the sheer variety of his experience enhanced his appreciation of diverse cultures and his ability to communicate to all in a confident and engaging manner. Independently minded, self-motivated with a thirst for knowledge, Edward is an exceptional candidate for university and would, we feel, make a superb undergraduate student of English Literature".I am writing to confirm that Edward Richards has volunteered with Action Tutoring from 22/4/21 to the 08/7/22. Action Tutoring provides volunteer tutors to work with pupils preparing for GCSE exams or Key Stage 2 SATs in schools across the country and Edward has volunteered as an English tutor for an hour a week for 2 months at Fairfield High School, Bristol.
Edward's help has been very much appreciated by the school and has provided a wonderful opportunity for pupils to benefit from some intensive one to one support in preparation for their exams.
Kind regards,
Sav Karia
