About Spencer
Hi, I’m Spencer—a dedicated and approachable tutor with a strong academic background in math and the sciences. I’m currently a biology major at The College of Wooster, where I’ve successfully completed challenging courses in chemistry, biology, and algebra. Back in high school, I consistently placed in math competitions, which helped sharpen my problem-solving skills and gave me a deep appreciation for how math concepts connect and build on each other. Beyond academics, I’ve worked in both clinical and educational settings, where I learned how important clear communication, patience, and professionalism are when helping others succeed. I bring that same mindset to every tutoring session—always prepared, organized, and focused on meeting students where they are. I specialize in tutoring middle school and high school students in algebra, biology, and chemistry. As a tutor, I focus on creating a comfortable and supportive learning environment where students feel confident asking questions and making mistakes—because that’s how real learning happens. I adapt my teaching methods to each student’s needs, using a mix of guided practice, visual aids, and real-world examples to help make abstract concepts feel more intuitive.
Teaching Method & Techniques
I start by identifying where a student is struggling—whether it’s with foundational concepts or problem-solving strategies. From there, I break complex topics down into manageable steps and use active learning techniques like questioning, guided walkthroughs, and spaced repetition. I also like to connect lessons to real-world situations or student interests to help the material stick.
Typical Lesson Plan
A standard session begins with a quick review of any homework or previously covered material. Then we introduce the new topic through explanation and example problems, followed by guided practice. I always leave time for students to ask questions and recap what we’ve covered to reinforce learning and build confidence for next time.
What Sets Me Apart
What sets me apart is that I’ve recently gone through many of these classes myself, so I understand both the content and the challenges students face today. I’m patient, approachable, and genuinely enjoy helping students build confidence in subjects they might have once found frustrating.
