About Me
My name is Ashwani Upadhyay. Music is my lifelong devotion. I have dedicated over two decades to mastering and preserving the rich heritage of Hindustani classical music through the Tabla. Living and working in Delhi—the cultural heart of India—keeps me directly connected to the heartbeat of the classical community.
I hold the prestigious Tabla Praveen degree (Master of Music equivalent), which grounds my practical skills in deep historical, theoretical, and mathematical understanding. With 20 years of teaching experience, I have successfully guided hundreds of students worldwide, transforming absolute beginners into confident performers and helping advanced players refine their artistry.
Practicing Tabla is often seen as a great form of Meditation. One can achieve all the benefits of Meditation by learning and practicing this great instrument.
As a seasoned stage performer, I have had the distinct honor of accompanying various renowned artists across prestigious classical stages. This extensive concert experience allows me to teach students the hidden nuances of live performance, stagecraft, and the art of spontaneous accompaniment.
My Mission
For me, teaching Tabla is not just a profession; it is a sacred mission to inculcate this great art in my students. I aim to pass down a rich, centuries-old oral tradition to the next generation. My primary goal is to ignite a genuine passion for Hindustani classical music, helping students connect emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually with the instrument while building deep mental focus, patience, and coordination.
My Teaching Method and Techniques
Lineage-Based Training: Authentic traditional styles (Gharanas) focusing on pristine finger placement and tone production (Nikaas).
Rhythmic Solfege: Students master speaking the rhythms (Bols) before playing them to ensure deep structural understanding.
Modernized Analytics: I simplify complex classical time cycles (Taals) using logical, modern breakdowns for quick comprehension.
Dual-Focus Development: A proven balance between rigorous solo performance skills and practical accompaniment techniques.
I offer a complimentary 30-minute introductory lesson for all new students. This session allows us to meet via webcam, assess your current skill level, discuss your musical goals, and ensure your audio/video setup is perfectly optimized for learning the Tabla online. Have a great learning

My Teaching Method and Techniques

Dual-Focus Development: Balance is maintained between rigorous solo performance skills and practical accompaniment techniques for vocalists, instrumentalists, or dancers.
My Lesson Plan: 60-Minute Lesson Plan
00–10 Mins: Hands-on warm-up focused on speed, stamina, and correcting physical posture.
10–25 Mins: Reviewing previous assignments with targeted corrections on clarity and timing.
25–45 Mins: Introducing new repertoire (Kayadas, Relas, Tukdas, or Peshkar) and breaking down their mathematical variations (Paltas).
45–55 Mins: Practical application with a software electronic Lehra (loop) to build rock-solid tempo (Laya).55–60 Mins: Summary of the lesson, recording audio reference clips, and assigning structured weekly practice goals.
