Methodology: I begin with the history of the given concept; for example, the concept of the Expectation (the mean) of distributions has quite an artificial history in that it took centuries of consensus between European mathematicians in order to agree on the final definition (finally resolved by Fermat et de Mere).
I then ensure the student understands as much as is possible before any work is given.
I then give the student examples so, again, for Expectation it would be 'why does the principle of expectation make sense?', 'what is the expectation of this discrete distribution?'. Supposing the student is familiar with Calculus I might then proceed with the Continuous definition but anyway.
This stage typically takes us to the end of the lesson.
