I've been studying cello with Basel since Summer 2021. I'm an adult learner who had cello lessons before (10+ years prior) and have played other musical instruments. I take lessons from Basel in person in their studio.

My lessons with Basel really revolve around any issues I’m having with my community orchestra repertoire, pieces I’m preparing for their semi-annual studio recital, or other pieces I want to work on for fun. He allows me to play any piece I’m interested in if I want. However, he has also been really great about providing suggestions on pieces/etudes when he sees an opportunity for growth or I’m looking for something new to play for their recital.

I don’t feel like there is a specific structure Basel has for my lessons. He is just so good as hearing me play, even if just a few notes, and knowing exactly what needs to be adjusted. And that ends up being the lesson topic. Or I’ll come in and say, “I’m struggling with this”. I play it. He sees the issue. He has a solution that is brilliant.

Basel is an absolutely amazing cellist. But even better, he’s able to break down complex concepts in a way I can understand. Some people are amazing musicians. Not all amazing musicians are good teachers. Basel is both. Since I’ve been taking lessons with him, my cello skills have improved exponentially. When I first started, I wasn’t great at shifting, sometimes I would tire out in my bow arm, and my tone was meh. Now, I can do a pretty great loose vibrato, I have much better tone, I’m fairly comfortable all over the fingerboard including in thumb positions, I can play passages and scales so much faster, and playing almost feels effortless (and if it doesn’t feel effortless, Basel will certainly see it and address it).

I absolutely recommend Basel to anyone who wants to learn cello and especially those who are truly dedicated to advancing their cello technique.
