About Dom

Why I’d like to be a tutor. I enjoy both working with kids and teaching, having done both tutoring and childminding privately, and having volunteered to help in schools several times whilst in Sixth Form College. I’ve had a long and deep interest in issues around political-economy, so would be an enthusiastic tutor of Modern History, Philosophy of Society (I’m also a fan of the Monty Python song on Philosophers), Human Geography, Politics, or Economics. I’ve also read many books about these, so would be able to give book recommendations to any students with an interest in those areas. The books I’ve read include Professor Thomas Piketty’s book Capital in the Twenty First Century (the full version), The General Theory by Keynes, and about 1,500 pages of Marx’s various writing, including Capital Volume 1 (including the footnotes), the Grundrisse, The Communist Manifesto, and Wages, Price and Profit. I’ve also read the first 700 pages of Hegel’s so-called “Shorter” Logic, but couldn’t enlighten a philosophy student with this as I haven’t a clue what Hegel meant. One particular event I helped at was a Maths Challenge day, during which I helped small groups of year 7s and 8s solve maths problems. I enjoyed encouraging them, and teaching in a way that was both entertaining and got them to think for themselves. Likewise, whilst in Year 11 I helped run the science club for the younger students (Years 7-8), and greatly enjoyed it. I have no particular interest in science or maths, but was always good at the exams, so would be competent enough to tutor science at GCSE level. However, my hobby of home brewing might make me be a more interesting tutor of biology. I also know the bible well (Old and New Testaments) having read most of it, particularly the Gospels, Job and Ecclesiastes, and having watched the Life of Brian (my favourite movie). So I’d be able to tutor on GCSE Religious Studies, whilst making it entertaining. For example, by presenting students with a list of quotes, and getting them to guess if they're from Marx or the bible (it's more difficult than you’d think). Furthermore, I do not believe education is purely about exams. I believe in educating students both in how to achieve academically, through both a sensible work ethic and guiding them in how to learn, and to broaden their understanding of the wider world, so that they can go on to fulfil whatever role they wish. I don’t want to turn out blinkered workaholics (I have enough classmates like that, they’re high-achieving and thoroughly miserable), but well-rounded students who are able to apply themselves effectively without working themselves to death. I currently work, and am soon being made redundant by, the anti-establishment crowd-funded economist Steve Keen for whom I do office administration (including sorting out his library into alphabetical order), liaising with his supporters, and posting books to his subscribers. I also found working for Steve extremely intellectually interesting, with him encouraging me to extend my reading into other economists such as Schumpeter, and would hope I could extend the horizons of interested students in the same way Steve did for me by giving book recommendations and teaching them how to better understand the world around them. In terms of my experiences, in late-2017, after completing my A-levels I spent a total of 3 months volunteering with Refugee Community Kitchen, and several partner charities, based in Calais, France. The charity cooked around 2,700 meals per day for refugees In Calais and Dunkirk (I realise “migrants” is the term generally used in the mainstream media, and think that reason enough to not use it). My role was primarily in taking donations, sorting stock, and putting together orders for smaller camps. I enjoyed the hard work, 8-10 hours of work per day, 5 days a week. And liked having a task to get on with. However, the structure of the charity was enthusiastically anti-hierarchical, so anyone there for over a month was rotated between all the roles they were trained for, meaning I did most of the manual jobs in the kitchen at various points. I greatly enjoyed the purposefulness of the work, and was disappointed to leave when it became financially impossible for me to stay. I then left and began my current job with Professor Steve Keen. In conclusion, I’m self-motivated, independent minded and enjoy teaching. I am ready to give book recommendations on areas including politics, economics and modern history. I’d like to do a job where I work with young people, and believe I can help extend their intellectual development, particularly for students with a pre-existing interest in the wider world. I look forward to your reply. Mr Dominic Tweed.
