I can help you understand history like you are reading a novel because once you understand it you can answer any type of question.I do use some active recall method like flashcard, blurting method and more. History can indeed interesting if you actually understand it. Memorizing is not all there to it to history, instead familiarize yourself with the topic and you can remember it without actually trying to.
