About Jack
Hello! My name is Jack, and I'm a tutor who specialises in Classics and Classical Culture.
I recently finished a research Master's at the Faculty of Classics in the University of Cambridge, where I graduated with the highest grade available, Distinction. Before that, I took my undergrad at UNSW with High Distinction for my thesis on Augustan architecture.
My work to date has centred on the so-called Roman 'imperial cult', and how aspects of imperial culture modulated in contact with the local cultures of Roman Italy and North Africa. In general, my primary interests are in Roman religion, how the many inhabitants made use of the various institutions of the empire to create a new reality for themselves, and how we can try to make sense of that reality through the artistic, archaeological and epigraphic record.
My qualification are:
Master of Philosophy in Classics (Distinction) - University of Cambridge
Bachelor of Arts in History (Honours) - University of New South Wales

My preferred approach to tutoring follows much along the same lines as those at Oxbridge — we ideally begin with a piece of work that you have written, in any form or level of completeness, and work it over in detail. We press problematic areas further, and are as rigorous with the strong aspects of your writing too. The purpose is to converse back and forth on your essay, provoking deeper problems with the work, or perhaps with the discipline as a whole and think, together, about how we might remedy them, or what they themselves can illuminate about the work. Tutoring can, of course, begin before you have written work to discuss. We can work together to formulate a research question, plan how to best tackle your assigned essay question, or compile strong, multilingual reading lists which will be fundamental to both a solid understanding of the subject area and a high mark.
In general, I offer sessions that are 1 hour, although depending on the nature of your work it may be preferable to extend that to 1.5 or 2 hours (the final consultation of a thesis, for example). Because of my preferred style of tutoring, it is most suitable for those seeking assistance with university-level essays/theses, and as such, I do not currently offer language tuition (except, of course, where it comprises part of an essay or thesis).
