About Tina

As I mentioned, I have no formal experience as a tutor, but I have helped several of my peers in essay writing, literary analysis and the like. I have 2 A*'s in iGCSE English Language and Literature and a 6 in IB HL English. I also genuinely love reading and analysing novels and poems. I particularly love how a text you don't appreciate, or a text that seems boring can become one of your favourites when you talk about it with others and really take the time to understand it. During GCSE's my novel was 'Fasting, Feasting' by Anita Desai and I hated it at first. I found it boring and I didn't understand it, but one day I was talking about it with my friends and I suddenly saw what it was all about, I saw the what Desai was trying to do and I appreciated it. I read it again and I was able to analyse and see the text holistically. This experience with being a student who was in the same place you are now is what really makes me equipped to tutor this subject. I understand how you may have specific problems, whether it's with engagement, analysis, exam technique, vocabulary or grammar (mine was exam technique) and I understand how to turn them to your favour to achieve the best you possibly can.

I've always loved reading and what's more reading in between the lines. I think this is where my love of words, reading and literature comes from. I also think that my love for these topics helped me achieve what I have; A*'s in both iGCSE English Literature and English Language, and a 6 in IB HL English Literature. I do not have any formal experience tutoring, but throughout my scholastic career, I have helped several of my peers with their essay writing, text commentary, wording and editing, and the literary analysis of poems, novels and short stories. I can cover 11+ English; 13+ English; GCSE and iGCSE English Literature and Language; IB English Literature; and A - Level English. Lessons will be structured around your needs, and this can be decided after the first lesson where you tell me: what texts your studying, what you need help with, i.e. essay writing, literary analysis, text commentary, grammar, understanding of your novel, specific sections of the exam. After that, we can plan together the most effective way to cover what you feel needs to be covered. Throughout our lessons, it will also become apparent to me what other things we may need to go over and we can address these. In terms of what we actually do, we will practise and hone literary analysis skills for unseens and just generally so that if you forget things you've memorised for your texts, you will be able to analyse on the fly. We will do this by making chapter, character, chronology and thematic sheets to give you a more holistic view of your novel as we read through it chapter by chapter. We will also make sheets for the poems in your poem anthology by dividing an A3 sheet into literary devices, meaning, meter, sometimes plot, the title and how all these things come together to serve the poems intended purpose. It can also be helpful to have idea of the background of the poet and the poem as this often gives insight into the meaning. In terms of essay writing and text commentary, that comes with consistent practice. You want to hone in on your ultimate point (usually the main message of the text or what the question wants you to discuss) and use paragraphs to build on said point. My English teacher described it as stringing beads on a thread, where your ultimate/main point is the thread and your paragraphs are the beads adoring your thread.
We can also practice things like timing, vocab and grammar; we'll do timed tests the closer we get to exams and whenever you write an essay or commentary I'd like you to time yourself and record it. We can also go over new verbs, adjectives, sentence structure, punctuation, planning and effective methods of expression. This will happen every time you write and analyse your work by yourself or with me or your teacher. Before I stop, I'd like to say that I will really stress the importance of planning. Planning is essential What we want is a really well-rounded view of your English in general.
