As a tutor, I focus on an active learning approach that prioritizes student engagement. Rather than just lecturing, I guide students through exercises and problems, encouraging them to actively apply concepts. I break down complex topics into manageable steps and ensure foundational knowledge is solid before advancing to more difficult material. To make learning more relatable, I often connect abstract ideas to real-life examples, which helps students grasp the material more effectively. Additionally, I use visual aids like diagrams and graphs, especially in subjects like calculus and physics, to enhance understanding. My teaching is also personalized, adjusting based on the student's learning style—whether they are visual, auditory, or hands-on learners. I like to use a first principles approach so that students can easily build off of the foundations.
A typical lesson plan begins with a brief review of prior material to assess the student's understanding, followed by an introduction of new concepts through clear, step-by-step explanations. Afterward, the student works on guided practice problems with my support, and then attempts independent problems to reinforce what they’ve learned. The lesson concludes with a summary and a reflection on key points, ensuring the student is ready to apply the concepts independently. I may also assign practice exercises to further consolidate their learning. These are methods I learned when I worked with students in Learning Support Services at UCSC.
What sets me apart as a tutor is my holistic approach, which not only focuses on academic content but also incorporates study strategies, time management, and confidence-building. I understand that math and science can be intimidating, so I foster a supportive, patient environment where students feel comfortable asking questions. My aim is to help students not just understand the material, but also develop the confidence to apply it effectively. I’m highly adaptable, tailoring lessons to meet the individual needs of each student, whether they need help with foundational concepts or more advanced topics.
My lessons are designed for middle school and high school students, as well as college, students to improve their knowledge of math and science. I can teach a wide range of subjects, including algebra, calculus, statistics, chemistry, biology, and computer science. These lessons are suited for students in introductory to intermediate-level courses and those seeking extra support to succeed in their academic or professional pursuits.
