About Russell
Over twenty years I have taught 1030 students programming, a career long enough that I have occasionally taught the younger siblings of students I first met many years earlier. My own training began at an advanced academic level, followed by years of applied technical work across a wide range of industries and contexts. I am known among long term students for being adaptable and endlessly patient, a reputation built from encountering nearly every kind of technical and motivational challenge over the years. I remain just as genuinely engaged with a brand new beginner today as I was with my very first student.

After twenty years of teaching programming, flexibility rather than a single fixed method genuinely defines my entire approach, since every student requires a genuinely different balance of structure and independence. With beginners I slow down considerably, relying on repetition and careful habit building, while with advanced students I shift towards independent, exploratory practice with far less direct guidance. I draw on two decades of accumulated case studies, usually already knowing several different explanations to offer when a standard approach is not working for a particular student. Advanced students eventually help mentor younger beginners informally, since teaching a concept solidifies mastery.
