About Abigail
Hi! I’m an opera student at University of North Carolina School of the Arts’ residential high school conservatory. I have been singing and studying music theory since I was a little girl, and I am extremely passionate about healthy vocal technique for young singers. In addition to teaching music, I also tutor a variety of other subjects, so I am well accustomed to the methods it takes to successfully teach a child. I offer lower rates than other voice teachers because although I have solid training in vocal technique, I am not as old, and therefore not as experienced as some other teachers. It is for this reason that I only teach students up to 13 years old, as I am confident that the knowledge and skills I possess are more than enough for a younger child to learn to their maximum potential from, but older children may be better suited with a different teacher!

I start my lessons off by doing an assessment with each singer to figure out where they are in their voice journey. I will test skills such as pitch matching, vocal awareness, and vocal range. I will then discuss what the student’s goals are with singing. Do they want to learn opera, musical theater, or pop? Do they want to be a professional singer someday? From the student’s answers to my questions and their vocal assessment, I will create a lesson plan in order to get them where they want to be. Each lesson will usually go as follows:
-quick vocal warmup targeting techniques the student needs
-student and I will work on a song (either of their choice or mine) pausing throughout to fix technical errors
-student and I will practice sight singing (if this is something the student is interested in)
