About Ekaterina

I have kept my personal language and communication skills updated through practice and personal development in teaching and interpretation. I have also published scientific papers for Russian and foreign journals and attended conferences and seminars worldwide. To date, I have published 40 articles and attended 23 events. I have valuable experience in teaching audiences of different ages and backgrounds. I have worked at various language courses and participated in social volunteer projects as well as several German and American research projects, devoted to children’s self-estimation and the role of women in mass media. Profound analytical skills in data analyses, international participation in research and localisation (google company) Beside the teacher work, I have been translating actively both orally and in written form. Among the key topics I successfully work with, there are medicine and chemistry, manufacture and industry, technical manuals, fiction (published) and various humanitarian texts. Numerous examples of translations are available on demand. I’ve been teaching theory and history of translation, conducting practical seminars on translation practice.

Find out more about Ekaterina

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in languages was formed naturally at a very early age, thanks to my mother who was always determined about my future career. She enrolled me in different clubs, changed my school for a linguistic gymnasium and further on, up to university, was choosing better teachers for me and better chances for me to dive into the pool of English culture. Thus, thanks to my parents and devoted teachers on my way, I was brought up in an English environment and genuine love for languages.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

As I travel a lot, when choosing topics to entertain my students, I try to tell them about the realities of the countries I've been to. There are thousands of trifles, details and bits which are never in the traditional textbooks. I love talking about cuisines and everyday life, differences in common issues, transport, traditions and current concerns. My duty as of a cosmopolitan teacher is to give my students something beyond the traditional presentation.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My secondary school teachers as well as university professors certainly served as role models to me. They were great personalities, each unique, but most of them were exclusive examples of professionalism, personal approach, humour, and support. We still keep in touch and now can discuss professional issues as colleagues.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor has to be flexible in time and demonstrate massive home preparation for every class. Thoroughly equipped, a tutor has to be on time and still have availability to answer all the student's questions even if they arise at the last moment. Unlike standard school programs, the private tutor's mission is to keep the student's individual pace and repeat as many times as needed. Private classes should be individually structured, positive, interesting and goal-oriented.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

An anecdote is how I chose German to be my second language at school. We had to choose between French and German and the best students (who I belonged to) were supposed to choose French (God knows why, such a superstition). I was torn between the expected choice to be made and the fact that the classmate, who I was in love with, was not a fantastic student and chose German. We were 10 years old then. I followed my heart and chose the German group. Never regretted, German became my dear one forever after.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

One of the main difficulties is lack of motivation from the students' side. No matter how hard you try at times, schoolers, teenagers, and adults might lack motivation and refuse independent work, necessary for a fast long-lasting result. Many students come with a goal, a wish but give up after a couple of classes having understood that persistent work is expected ahead, and regular times need to be devoted to the language. This tendency is a well-known phenomenon, on the one hand, and still a discouraging experience for the teacher, on the other.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I wouldn't call it a passion but what I never refuse from is interpretation. It is an independent aspect of linguistics but still a very connected skill, art, which I also use to illustrate certain moments to my students. I have been teaching translation and interpretation for many years at the university and I regularly translate books and other types of text. A proper joy for me.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?

I was born a teacher, I guess, which was just a favorite game in childhood and a well-proven fact through the years. I feel my students, I can make them laugh and listen attentively at the same time, I know the language from inside and take my job seriously, as a vocation. There were a couple of moments in my life when I had a professional crisis ad thought about taking up something else, but I couldn't. It's my addiction, my life and my destiny.
