About Mykola

I majored in Mathematics at Stony Brook University and have tutored privately since 2010. I've had many successful students who attended Ivy League level schools including Cornell, Brown, and Harvard. Over the years, I've focused exclusively on high school mathematics to provide the most tailored and indepth approach for all my lessons.

My most memorable student was failing trigonometry (50's), the last math class she needed to graduate. She had no plans for college, she didn't think she could get in, and was very pessimistic about her work opportunities out of high school. After 3 months and a crushing 87 on her final, her parents reached out to let me know that she started preparing college applications over the summer.

We go through old tests, quizzes, homeworks to discover how the student progressed through the current year. We examine short falls and misunderstandings to better gauge where the learning will start. As math is a compounding subject, it is always best to go back and fix issues from earlier in the student's math career before pushing forward. Once we have a plan set, we review each topic in turn and tie it into current assignments.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

When I was in college, I helped a friend get an A in his pre-calculus course. He enjoyed my teaching so much that he suggested I look into tutoring. From there, I took on my first paid student and discovered that I have a skill for presenting information in an easily digestible manner.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I love trigonometry, especially problems involving SohCahToa with right triangles on a plot. Every student I meet finds these difficult, and it gives me great joy when I show them just how simple they actually are. I do not enjoy 3-D shapes because the underlying skill students need is spatial awareness, which is very difficult to bridge if it's missing.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I wouldn't say I have any role models in my life. It's more that I look up to my own potential future. Knowing that I can improve and do better inspires me to continue learning, exploring, and improving to become the best version of myself.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Someone who can put themselves in the shoes of a student seeing the information for the first time. It's very tempting to explain things from a mathematical standpoint, which typically leaves students with more questions than answers. It's much more helpful when you can show something using real-world, tangible examples.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I had a Calculus IV professor who used the tiniest notebook in the world to write his lesson notes in. It was so small, it fit in the palm of your hand. One day, we were 45 minutes into solving a triple integration problem when the professor stopped for a minute. He carefully looked over his work on the board and immediately plunged his face into the tiny notebook. After a moment of silence and a few page flips, he grabbed an eraser and started clearing 90% of the work we had just done. Another peek in his notebook, squinting as if trying to see a speck of dust with his bare eye, he turned to the class and said "I apologize, there was a minus here instead of a plus," pointing to 1 of only 3 operations on the board. Moral of the story is that if you don't write your notes clearly, they won't serve as a reliable reference.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

More and more students lack a foundational understanding of prerequisite math subjects, forcing them to spend more time catching up instead of studying the new material presented in class. It also doesn't help when the same student or parent chooses to skip 1-2 weeks of tutoring just because school is on break.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I'm very particularly drawn to passing along my knowledge of a subject to someone else. Whether it's construction, coding, math, gardening, banking, finance, investing, auto mechanics, optimization, or a one off topic, I love being able to share my experience and help others solve their problems.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)?

I'm always available when my students need answers to their questions. I encourage any of my students to text me in between lessons instead of sitting stuck on homework. I'd rather take five minutes of my time to keep things moving than wait a whole week to clear up a simple roadblock.
