Lesson Plan: Tenses for Kids | Present, Past, Future Simple
Level: A1-A2 | Age: 8-12 years | Time: 30 minutes | Focus: Speaking + TPR
1. Lesson Objectives
By the end of the class, students will be able to:
1. Recognize the words: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow
2. Say 1 action in Past, Present, and Future using gestures
3. Use I did / I do / I will in a sentence
2. Materials
Flashcards with actions: jump, eat, play, sleep | 3 big cards: YESTERDAY / TODAY / TOMORROW | Song: The Tense Train tune or clap rhythm
3. Lesson Stages
Warm-up | 5 min: Tense Train Chant + TPR
Hold up the 3 time cards. Teach actions:
- YESTERDAY: point back + clap = I jumped yesterday
- TODAY: point down + stomp = I jump today
- TOMORROW: point forward + reach = I will jump tomorrow
Kids copy you. Fast, physical, no writing yet.
Presentation | 7 min: Story Time with Flashcards
Use 1 character: Tom the Cat
1. Yesterday, Tom slept. Show sleeping flashcard + YESTERDAY
2. Today, Tom plays. Show playing + TODAY
3. Tomorrow, Tom will eat fish. Show eating + TOMORROW
Drill: Class repeats after you with gestures.
Practice | 10 min: Tense Hop Game
Put the 3 time cards on the floor on screen or in the room.
Call out: Sleep! Kids hop to YESTERDAY and say I slept yesterday.
Call out: Play! Hop to TODAY = I play today.
Call out: Eat! Hop to TOMORROW = I will eat tomorrow.
This makes grammar physical.
Production | 6 min: My Day Drawing
Students draw 3 boxes: Yesterday / Today / Tomorrow.
They draw 1 action in each and say: Yesterday I _. Today I _. Tomorrow I will ___.
2-3 students share on camera.
Wrap-up | 2 min: Goodbye Chant
Clap and say together: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow I can speak English now!
