About Ryan
As I mentioned earlier, I taught college music for a decade in Iowa, and now currently tour and sing lead with long-running vocal jazz group The Four Freshmen. I love singing, composing, and arranging all styles of music, but jazz has my heart. The harmonic and rhythmic languages have such innate potentials that are often so restricted in widely-consumed popular music content. The freedom of jazz improvisation is the single most human experience I have ever experienced in my life. I love helping anyone find what that is for them within the realm of music, whether it’s jazz or not.

Online or in person, I get to know you and your learning styles! I love de-mystifying ANYTHING music. If something’s hard to understand in music, it’s being taught poorly. I like making concepts clear and showing how they’re useful in practice.
As a voice teacher, I emphasize healthy singing informed by fundamental physiological knowledge of your instrument and how it works to successfully achieve a wide variety of vocal styles. Mixing what are, in my opinion, the best elements of classical and commercial singing methods, I know I can help you further your goals and get closer to your full potential as a singer!
I enjoy teaching all experience levels. I give useful exercises and homework that solidify concepts and train useful music skills. I’m available in between lessons for check-ins or questions, and regularly love your feedback about how lessons are going.
